This British-inspired extra special bitter was named after a Billy Bragg song. The Englishman is one of the most notable political singer/songwriters of our time. The style is more full-bodied and flavorful than the ‘Best’ or ‘Special’ Bitters we have done in the recent past – and it is a bit higher in alcohol than traditional British version. It has a rich copper color with a malt-dominant aroma. Notes of toasted malt, caramel, and dates are present from the use of CaraAroma and Special B malts. Dry-hopping with Styrian Goldings gives a spicy background in the aroma and the palate. The medium bitterness helps to balance out the malty sweetness.

Location: Draft at the Milwaukee Ave Brewpub, 7/16/14

Aroma: The nose is toast and bready malts, some caramel, and a nice, clean earth hop
Appearance: It pours a nice copper-amber color with an off-white head and great lacing on the glass
Flavor: It has a clean malty flavor, bready, with a good solid earthy hop backbone
Palate: The mouthfeel is very clean and smooth, it drinks rather nicely, with a clean finish
Overall Impression: I thought this was a really nice looking ESB. It is a smooth and flavorful example of the style as well. I quite enjoyed it.
