Custom blended by head brewer, Brian Nelson, Hardywood First Anniversary Ale celebrates the end of the brewery's first full year in business. This blend consists of three bourbon barrel aged beers, 40% 2011 imperial milk stout, 40% 2012 imperial milk stout, and 20% 2012 Virginia Blackberry, and offers rich yet mellow flavors of creamy chocolate, oaky vanilla and a hint of bramble berry. A wax-dipped bottle of this unpasteurized ale was exceptional at the time of bottling, but will continue to round out with months, or possibly even years of cellaring. Read Less

Free bomber courtesy of RABinVA. Thanks Ryan! Pull this out to celebrate my 900th Virginia rating! Pretty sure I’ve never had a blackberry milk stout before, so this should be interesting. Pours a clear blackberry color with a large creamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of mild berries, chocolate, toffee, wood, vanilla. The taste is almost a bit sour. Bright, tart berries, wood, citrus, toffee, booze. Medium bodied. I might like a little more stout character, but overall this is very nice.

22oz bottle pours a watery, mahogany brown with some cloudy, white head. Nose has plenty of blackberry, some toast, some chocolate. Flavor is sweet, fruity, more than just berries, some vanilla, some chocolate, a little licorice. Slightly watery, fruity finish. I wanted a bit more.

Draft at brewery. Before I got even one sip of this brew I knocked a bunch of it on my shirt - great! Well well, it poured a near black color, with a very tiny tan head. Aroma was notes of berry, with some toasted, dark cocoa malts, touch of vanilla bourbon. Flavor is nice bourbon, toasted malts, berry notes.
