12 ounce bottle from Trenton Road Takeout in Falsington, PA. Deep copper red color. Small beige cap. Bittersweet toasted malt aroma. Big boozy notes upfront. Toasted malt, Resiny hops and caramel notes. Too much, too soon, too late! Stay home tomorrow!!

Bottle shared with Ariel at Beer Market Jaffa. Hazy deep red-amber color with a beige head. Aroma of malt, caramel, fruitiness, a bit of toast, nutty hints and light hoppy notes. Sweet malty flavor, caramelly, fruity, a bit biscuity, finishes with bitterness and mild citric hops. Medium to full-bodied, rounded mouthfeel. Decent, balanced and quite drinkable for 9.2%.

Very astringent leave. Taste has some coffee. Pours dark brown with good head and lacing. Some dark chocolate. Soft carbonation with cloying texture. Bottle.

Draft @ The Reservoir, Waterbury, VT. Dark mahogany color, thin ring of head. Aroma of syrupy caramel, very slight booze with some fig juice. After sipping the glass for a good 10 minutes, it wasn’t really working for me. Texture is very syrupy with the same flavors as the aroma. Alcohol shows up a bit too much. I guess if you like big malty beers, you may like this. Perhaps a few bottles to cellar to mellow out the ABV would make this much improved. I wouldn’t recommend on draft. The Double Bag is a better drink.

New Beer Distributors, NY 330lml ($3): Pours a reddish brown with a small head that leaves no lacing. I haven’t had double bag in quite a long time, so I can’t compare the two. Aroma is dried fruit, malts, and some sugar... not really hops. Taste is lightly bitter, with plenty of astringency. Rather sweet and leaves a sticky taste in my mouth for quite a while. Not really my thing, but ok.

Bottle from Half Time. Pours hazy dark ruddy copper with a slight beige head. Aroma is lightly fruit - almost light cola. Full bodied. Flavor is very malt, not very hop. It is fresh. It’s fruity bubble gum. Not in a bad way. Bears a slight resemblance to cola. Finishes dusty, fruity bubble gum and fairly towards dry. Surprising for all the malt. This is a pretty good sipping beer. Hop is hard to differentiate, but I think that’s what separates this from barley wine. Damn tasty beer.

Had this at Long Trail Brewery on Tap. Poured into a pint glass. I bought two 4-packs to take home, one to drink and another to cellar.
A - Arrived at the table with a finger of haze-like head. Quiet a bit of sediment floating around and a brown / amber color. Think haze like amber color.
S - brown sugar and maltiness for sure are all over this beer. Some earthy dry fruits like raisins are here as well.
T - Lots of alcohol taste, figs and a slight bit of belgian breadiness to it. The alcohol is really strong in this one and maybe a bit of chocolate or caramel flavoring. Spicy peppery finish.
M - MMM. This is a heavy beer but it’s a light carbonation when I swish around a bit. It stays around for a while which is great because the taste is fantastic
O - I had this fresh, the week it was released so my feeling might be different than yours but this is a fantastic beer. I’m glad 2 packs are sitting in my cellar right now ready to be consumed. It’s a great warming beer for winter time.
UPDATE: 2011 and 2012 side by side week of 2012 release.
2011 has turned a murkier haze than the last bottle. New release has a far better clarity. The nose is sweeter with more brown sugar and a bit more breadiness. More pronounced nose. Taste is also improved. A lot of the boozy flavors are muted and it’s slightly less spicy. It’s a lot sweeter after the year. Mouthfeel and finish are both the same.
I wasn’t expecting this beer to improve very much after a year. Still, I bought a 4-pack and put it away to see what happened. It’s impressive. I’m enjoying the 2011 a lot more than the 2012. I do like the 12’s spiciness. Anyway, this was a nice beer that got better. Rating remains unchanged.

Sampled on draft at the Headkeeper this beer poured a hazy dark brown color with a medium sized creamy tan head that lingered forever and left incredible lacing. The aroma was quite Belgian and reminded me of the dark beers from St Bernardus - notes of bread, caramel, tea and fig. The flavor was intensely boozy with a tangy sour caramel presence and notes of fig, raisin, molasses and tea. The finish was long with prominent alcohol that really detracted. Moderately full bodied. Interesting.

Almost no head or very much carbonation at all, I thought I had a bad bottle actually, but there’s just enough really. Dark brown, aroma is some sweet malts, dark fruit, chocolate, vanilla, taste is the same, easy to drink, not a lot of abv burn, very good.
