Astrid is a bright golden color with assertive aromas of spice, bread crust, apple, and fennel seed. Citrus, oak, and anise give way to warm vanilla notes followed by a slightly tart finish.

We brew this saison with Pilsner, raw wheat, and Biscuit malt, and ferment it in stainless steel for a year with a blend of traditional saison yeast and Brettanomyces. After fermentation is complete, we transfer the beer to Scandinavian Aquavit barrels, where it ages for an additional eight months. Skål!

A big dose of red wine here and lots of bretta. Some aquivit, which I’ve never really appreciated in beed. Golden pour with good head and lacing. Tangy finish. Tap at City Tap House.

Draught at EBF, 2/5/16.
Pale, lucid golden body shows a gentle haziness and low carbonation. Flimsy white head atop shows low retention.
Kind of disappointed that Allagash is calling this a saison. I know anything remotely Belgian is a saison nowadays, but at 10.2% (I know a lot of that is picked up from the aquavit, but still), this is about as close to a saison as it is a pilsner. Anyways, the nose shows rock candy, coriander, a heavy wood element, including some strong oakiness and plentiful fruitiness. Very estery and boozey and despite the spiciness of the aquavit coming through, it’s not all that aromatic or interesting.
The flavor shows a rather flimsy body and tons of tannin, with an overabundance of esters and lots of bland, nutty barrel character. Some spiciness seems drowned in light sugar and there’s very little balance to be had in the beer, let alone any brightness. Brett seems punchy and tangy and not particularly well-matched to aquavit. Not sure what type of beer would be a good match for an aquavit barrel, but I definitely don’t think it was this one.
