Beautiful dark amber-mahogony color. Smoked chedder cheese and caramel in the nose give hints of the off putting mouth, which adds some butterscotch flavors. Potential to be great.

Reddish-brown colour. Smokey nose with some tartness. Fizzy, slightly tart but with a smooth smokiness. Has body issues, probably because of the sloppy QC that’s allowed this thing to keep fermenting. The smoke character is pleasant, though, so if they dial it in a bit better they might have themselves a beer.

Bottle. Amber colour, with little head that does not linger. The aroma is distinctly smoky in a pleasant woody meaty way (not as intense and acrid as some german rauch bier). The flavour is pleasant, but not terribly special, or smoky. There is a woody taste that with the hops well balances the malt. The carbonation is quite fizzy. The smokiness reappears in the aftertaste. An enjoyable specialty beer.

Draught at the brewpub. Nut brown, clear, small creamy head. Beechwood smokey nose. Dryish with light-medium body and clean mouthfeel. A salty finish where the beechwood smoke lingers. Flavourwise it’s near perfect, but it lacks the soft mouthfeel and gentle malt character of the top examples of the style.
