bottle from boxbeer.dk cloudy brown, smooth light brown head. very rich and complex aroma, sour malts, spices, faint brown cookie spices, faint licorice. This aroma is crazy deep and complex. flavor is malts, sour malts, palate is thick, aftertaste is burning yet also very smooth. One of the first old ale beers i really like. I think the barrelling is responsible at least partly to the tart notes that blend in so well with the deep malts. so velvety. So happy i decided to pay the steep price for this bottle.

My first one from this Oklahoma brewery, an ’old ale’ aged on sherry barrels and bottled in 37.5 cl ’geuze’ bottles, 2016 vintage. Creamy, dense, attractively yellowish pale beige head, lightly lacing and moussy with a firm, lasting rim and islands of foam in the middle, crowning a dark but translucent, hazy burgundy brown beer with ruddy hue. Very ’oud bruin’-like aroma of candied figs, dried prunes, medium dry sherry and manzanilla pasada, dusty old furniture woodiness, passion fruit jam, butterscotch, soggy rye bread, balsamic vinegar, old and oxidized red wine, raisins, hay, dry earth, mouldy nut shells, wild brambleberries, sour yoghurt, even a touch of cheddar and something not unlike the juice coming out of a frying horsesteak, but very subtly so. Estery, lively onset, some pear and blackberry sweetishness soaked in much more expressive sourness, a tad balsamico-like but more reminiscent of wry unripe gooseberries, redcurrant and grape peel wryness, with somewhat spritzy carbonation, yet still retaining a rather vinous mouthfeel. The sourness adds quite a lot of astringent dryness to an otherwise rounded, sweetish caramelly malt ’underground’ with pleasantly nutty accents, while the ’fruit peel wryness’ continues and connects with a rich, drying finish in which the sherry flavour elegantly steps in, including warming alcohol heating up the throat in a gentle, non-obnoxious but very noticeable manner; lots of oaky tannins as well (though only very, very faintly vanilla-like retronasally), along with an earthy, leafy hop bitter note providing quite a lot of ’afterbitterness’ which is a bit enhanced by the alcohol. A deep but unmistakable hop bitter note does stick to the root of the tongue in the end, after this well-balanced mix of dry brown ale and eventually very expressive sherry flavours has passed. This is not quite what I was expecting, picturing ’old ale’ as a very malt-forward, rich, sweetish, classically English type of beer, and imagining the sherry accentuating the sweetness; of course, anything aged on wine barrels (in this case fortified wine) will add astringency and a slightly vinegar-like flavour, but in this case the effect comes very close to an aged Flemish red - including the rounded, mellow caramelly malt core this style needs (and is all too often neglected by non-Flemish brewers, in my humble opinion). Most of all though, this is a beautiful cellaring beer with an ’old’ kind of feel to it, mature and noble, one to sip with respect for its inherent complexity - and cautiousness for its higher-end ABV. Very fruity and estery, dryingly tart with still this caramelly sweet ’heart’ and very woody with a strong sherry note without it becoming completely dominating (as was the case in another sherry barrel-aged beer I had last week), this is very well-done, rich and high in profile. Not sure if coming to an ’oud bruin’-like profile like this was the intention, but that is what they got, and they got it in a most enjoyable, complex and distinguished way. Pleasantly surprised, I’m on the lookout for more bottles from this brewery.
