Charlies Cool Porter is an organic porter at 5.9% ABV. Porter takes its name from the politically incorrect tradition that took place in the English ports in olden days. The harbour workers, the porters, had a beer or two in the morning before they had to start the hard work in the harbour. Charlie Chaplin was also politically incorrect in the thirties as were the brave Frenchmen, who established the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in the seventies. They made a lot of fun of self-importance, with institutions, religions as well as with those in power. No one escaped satire and there was an equal split out to the right and left. But it came to a tragic end by a cowardly attack which cost 17 people their lives. The consequence of this must not be that there is less room for satire and making fun of fools and rulers. Try this beer to heavy stews.

Bottle. A more or less black one, topped by a dense, finger-thick tan head leaving lacing. The aroma is rather roasted, with dark chocolate, coffee notes and some toffee and nuts. Roasted malts, coffee and dark chocolate in the flavor, rather dry on the palate, with a pleasant carbonation. It’s full-bodied and smooth, with some toast and charcoal chiming in. Lasting roasted, chocolatey finish with some coffee and dried fruit hints. Quite pleasant this one, but sort of too one-dimensional for me. 160312

Black colored, small non lasting tan head. Aroma is of chocolate and strongly roasted coffee. Taste is medium- sweet malt, chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, sweet licorice, although the shift between the two is too sudden, medium+ bitter roasted coffee dry finish and aftertaste. Medium- bodied, soft carbonation, bit creamy. Roasty. (bottle, Bierhalle Deconinck, Vichte)

Bottle 50 cl. Pours an almost clear black with a warm reddish tint and a creamy, beige head. Lovely juicy, pruney nose. Rich, sweet body, dry licorice, again more dark, dried fruits than roastiness. Solid. 081215
