På Amager Bryghus har vi altid med stor fornøjelse nydt at åbne dørene for gæstebryggere fra den ganske verden. Black Nitro er således et samarbejde med den amerikanske græsrodsølhippie Shaun E. Hill, som har været med til bringe Nørrebro Bryghus frem i eliten af innovative danske bryghuse, og nu er på vej med sit eget projekt Hill Farmstead Brewery tilbage i hjemstaten Vermont. Til Black Nitro valgte Shaun at grave en gammel opskrift frem fra hans helt unge år som brygger. Mørke IPA’er er en trend fra USA, som med denne øl nu også har ramt Danmark. Farven er mørkebrun på vej mod det sorte, men ved anvendelse af en særlig teknik har vi undgået de brændte toner, som normalt følger med de mørke malte. Aromaen er kan vel nærmest beskrives som bredspektret humle gennem anvendelsen af en vifte af noble amerikanske sorter. Så er du til mørke og fyldige øl og samtidig nyder de fantastiske duftindtryk fra god amerikansk aromahumle, så er vi ikke i tvivl om, at du hermed har fundet en ny yndlingsøl. This was poured into a nonic pint glass.
The appearance was a black color with a tan one finger foamy head that dissipated within less than about forty seconds. Lacing was mostly messy.
The smell started off with roasty coffee to sweet cocoa beans. Light pine and citrusy hops make an effort to try and blend but remain in the background. Black licorice ends up coming for the balance.
The taste was mainly sweet with a dried cocoa malty-like substance. Sticky sweet licorice notes slide into the aftertaste and runs into the finish.
On the palate, this one sat about medium bodied with a decent sessionable to sipping quality to it. Carbonation seemed good for the style and for me. Black licorice creates a big smooth creamy sort of feel to this beer.
Overall, as a black ale/CDA, I don’t see it. Roasty malt sweetness is too overpowering and there’s not enough bitter hops to bring in the normal balance of the style. However, the creativity of a collaboration of what I did get from this beer is really good as I know I would have this again for me. Just don’t look at this one as a normal black ale and you’ll be fine.

Bottle from Mikkeller Webshop; pitch black pour with a big frothy tan head, aroma has some pine hop and roast malt, taste pine, chocolate and roast malt, dark berries, bitter finish, pleasant drop.

500 ml bottle purchased at Hunger Mountain Co-Op. Appearance is a pitch black ink with lasting carbonation. The aroma of dark chocolate, caramel and earthy hops underneath.
The thing I enjoyed most was the full body and the smooth velvet carbonation level over my palate; it did have the feel of sampling from a Nitro Tap rather than a bottle. I also was expecting more of a stout when in fact this is a Black IPA/ CDA. No matter because I enjoy bitterness in my stouts and enjoy both styles. This brew had a substantial amount of earthy pine bitterness that lingered after the sip. A nice balance with the dark roasted malts. Tasty.

Olfactif: Présence d’agrumes avec du pamplemousse. Notes de torréfaction: noisettes, viande fumée. Soupçon de résine. Bon équilibre entre accents de houblons et de malt. Noire à la mousse épaisse, rocailleuse et très persistante. En bouche, une entrée résineuse sur des malts torréfiés à point introduit une longue finale aux notes de sapin Baumier intenses. Les sucres sont à point et contrebalancent efficacement l’amertume résineuse de la finale. La torréfaction est très efficace. Les notes de cendre, de cacao et de noisettes se juxtaposent à la perfection aux accents de résine et de pamplemousse. Quel équilibre des saveurs. Un parfait exemple du style. Une bière de référence.

16.9 oz bottle poured into a Spiegelau tulip. Black with 2.5 fingers of light tan head. Aromas of chocolate, caramel, licorice, subtle floral notes. Tastes of chocolate, floral notes, light pine. Medium body with a dry finish.

Bottle: Poured a clear black color ale with a large dark brown foamy head with OK retention and some light lacing notes. Aroma of dry bitter roasted malt notes with some light green resin notes is OK. Taste is also a mix of roasted malt with light dry bitter notes with some light resin notes. Body is lighter then style average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. I thought this beer was a bit short on hops flavors and thinner then I would have liked it to be.

Bottle, 0.50l and on tap & Hoppiness Beer Stop. Bottled version pours pitch black with medium soapy light brown head and yeasty particles floating. Aroma of tropical fruits, dried fruits, mild roasted malt and chocolate with raisins. Taste starts with sweet chocolate and mild roasted malt, follows by fresh grassy notes, mouthfeel is spicy and warming, while finish is bitter. Full body, oily texture and soft carbonation in palate. Draught version is similar, only aroma is even more pronounced with tropical character, while bitterness is even heavier than from bottle. Both editions are black as hell & heavenly good...

Muddy brown color with tanned head. Big massive hoppy nose with lots of grapefruit and cotton candy jumping out. Big caramel, chocolate malt and toffee character give this beer a big malty balance. First sip is all hops though with tons of candied apples and grapefruit character. Very well made with both hop and malt characters well defined.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Yoav’s place. Thanks kerenmk. Black with a beige head. Aroma of piney and "green" hops, slightly stale and soapy, with some roast. Roasty flavor with faint sweetness, piney and "green" hops, and nice bitterness. Medium-bodied. Decent.

Bottle. Pours hazy black with airy tan head. Clear aroma of hops and citrus, with notes of malt and fruit. Bitter, intense, hoppy flavour with notes of citrus, complemented by sweetish touches of yeast and malt. Hints of liquorice. Bitter aftertaste with citric hints. Good stuff.
