330ml bottle bought at Vinmonopolet Langnes. Declining fawn-coloured head leaving spotty lacing behind. Cloudy red-brown body. Quite inviting aromas of dark berry fruits joined by a touch of oak. Taste of wood, dried fruits, caramel and berry skins. Warming and lingering finish of berry fruits. Vinous impression. Loses some of its fresh flavours after a while in the glass. Decent, anyway (Tromsø 13.03.2017).

Cette Cognac Barrel est à la bière ce que l’art contemporain déstructuré est à l’art. On ne sait pas exactement comment l’appréhender, cela ne ressemble à rien et la vue d’ensemble difficilement compréhensible mais avecde-ci, de-là présente des pans intéressants voire appréciables. Etant davantage amateur d’équilibre et d’homogénéité, je reste relativement dubitatif face à une bière que je dénommerai au final plus comme expérimentale, entre ambrée, barley wine et IPA sur des arômes boisés, de cognac et une présence épicée de trop prégnante. En verre, la robe est ambrée foncée (EBC aux environs de 48) sur une très faible effervescence et une mousse blanc cassé quasi inexistante. Le déséquilibre apparaît aux nez pourtant complexe. Prune, cerise, vin liquoreux, boisé, cognac (le travail avec le fut de cognac se fait largement ressentir) orange confite sont au programme sur une alliance perfectible. La première bouche laisse apparaître des arômes de raisin, de cognac et de petites notes épicées sur un accord imparfait. La deuxième bouche est plus structurée sur des arômes de caramel/cognac. L’arrière bouche est cependant de trop épicée et s’intègre mal à l’ensemble. L’amertume qui apparaît en troisième bouche déstabilise. Peu harmonieuse à mon sens et relativement intense, elle présente à la fois des notes fumées et boisées. La densité gustative est quant à elle importante, ne marquant que davantage les déséquilibres. L’alcool, titrant à 9,5 % Abv aurait pu être davantage mis en avant, mais soutient convenablement la structure de la bière en permettant un final long mais encore trop épicé et sur des arômes fumés ne s’intégrant que poussivement. Des goûts nous en avons donc dans cette Cognac Barrel de la Brasserie La Débauche. A mon sens, elle manque cependant de Goût, l’équilibre et le raffinement n’étant pas au programme, même si l’intensité gustative et la richesse d’arômes pourront plaire à certains.

Bottle at craig’s. Pours deep amber, nose is smoky, malty, caramel, toffee, taste is similar, sweet, sugary, what I assume is cognac.

Bottle thanks to Joe. Appearance - deep amber with an orange tinge. Off white head. Nose - orange and toffee. Booze. Taste - tangy marmalade and booze. Light boozy marmalade. Palate - medium bodied with a tangy texture and a long dry yet rich finish. Overall - good. And interesting.

This one foams right up. Amber colour, and quite hazy. The aroma is really phenolic, not good, like cleaner or band-aid. There’s some richer malts underneath of this. Fizzy, which is not good for a barley wine. But the taste is actually not bad - Omani halwa (ok, without the smoke, just the deeply caramelized date sugar), almonds, light spice, and a mellow dark sugar character. There is a bit of an orangey note, some booziness, and again lots of date character. Almost harsh alcohol in the finish.

330mL bottle, pours a deep dark brown with a humungous cascading beige head. Aroma smells like this has been tampered with in some way, with tons of phenols, but somehow still brings out notes of caramel, light cognac, and dark fruits. Flavour is much more complex, with toasted dry caramel, cognac, a little toffee and some brown sugar. Very highly carbonated, but not in too detracting a way. Really nice stuff.
