Stark rauchiger Beginn. Süßlich, moderat herb, schnell trocken werdend. Spritzig, zum Ende aber unsüffig, etwas holzig. 10/8/9/9//9

Rauchbier by this Berlin brewpub, from tap at Bar Beenhouwer during the Strassenbräu tap takeover. Medium thick, opening, off-white, mousy head, hazy pale amberish-tinged orange blonde robe. Aroma of smoked wood and a touch of smoked herring, ripe peach, apple peel, white bread, banana peel, hint of dried thyme. Moderately fruity onset, clean and lager-like with a sweet peach hint, rounded slick malt body with minerally, lively fizz, just a tad biscuity; the smokiness becomes more apparent in the finish, adding a retronasal smoked bacon and wood note, but not too sharply so; ends with a herbal hop bitter touch, lingering minerals and a sweet maltiness still flavoured with a dash of smoke. Easygoing and – for a Rauchbier – quite accessible with only limited smokiness, as seems to have been the intention; in spite of its name, which clearly refers to the famed Aecht Schlenklera brand, this is more akin to that other, more gentle Rauchbier classic called Spezial Christian Merz.
