A silky and memorable milk stout saturated in chocolatey notes and the smooth texture of oat flakes. Complimented by the catchy aroma of those coconut shavings we happened to throw in, this one’s so smooth you won’t need you won’t need to reach for any coconut-chocolate confection ever again.

Can at Persee, Deventer. Aroma is sweet dark malt with lots of coconut, vanilla, caramel, some cocoa and milk chocolate. Fairly sweet, bit thin for the aroma. Nice milk chocolate coconut Stout, could be more full.

11/7/2020. Can at the NCFC relegation party, bought at Beer Republic online store. Poured mid-dark brown with a small frothy beige head. Aroma of vanilla, coconut, milk chocolate, lactose and slight ashy notes. Medium plus sweetness and light bitterness. Moderate body, slight creamy texture, average carbonation. Nice but preferred the Noir.

My first from this craft brewery in St. Petersburg, a 'pastry milk stout' so to speak, with lactose, coconut and vanilla. From a 50 cc can with neat print and black coating, bought at one of those countless Dutch craft beer webshops you have these days. Audibly fizzing , initially thick and very mousy, pale yellowish-beige head, quickly reduced to a waferthin and interrupted greyish-beige ring and nothing in the middle, looking like the head on a glass of coke and eventually vanishing almost completely; 'soupy'-cloudy, very dark mahogany brown robe, almost blackish in general appearance but not quite, with ruddy-burgundy hue. Aroma of a cheap brand of coke, indeed coconut (as in a can of coconut milk), vanilla obvious enough (luckily), milk chocolate bars, toffee (Chocotoff), light liquorish touch, almond, lightly toasted pecan nuts, praliné, hints of iced tea, fried eggplant, vague salmiak, wet leather, damp earth note, even a very vague whiff of manure somewhere. Sweet onset with a sourish touch, softly carbonated (in fact: way too soft, bordering on flat), sugary lactose effect stretching throughout, but not in an annoyingly sticky way, light fruity accents (pear, fig), smooth body but feeling too thin at 6% ABV due to the undercarbonation. Silky, though, with an altogether pleasant toffeeish and milk-chocolatey main character; roastedness is practically nil, while the coconut and vanilla aromas feature very prominently retronasally. Bayleaf-, clove- and eventually strong liquorish-like herbal effects turn out powerful as well in the end, while the sweet and toffeeish character begins to fade; a herbal, tea-ish hop bitter note pops up in the end and lingers a bit, but I have the impression that this somewhat wry end bitterishness has a more 'chemical' character and could be due to the added flavourings - it does not feel very hoppy, nor roasty to me. Coke-like, in many ways, as if some local competitor to the Coca Cola Company would concoct some kind of coconut vanilla coke in an act of desperately trying to compete... Thin due to undercarbonation but also structurally, and the flavours do not feel entirely right here. This stout is carried by its coconut and vanilla aromas - this is a very good example of how craft beer has gone downhill due to its own popularity, with in this case a brewer trying to pimp a meagre and flawed stout with fancy - but altogether rather artificial - aromas. And the aromas of coconut and vanilla, as much as I love both of them, are just too thin and volatile to carry an entire beer, I'm afraid. I can drink this entirely, sure, but one is enough and I am not very much inclined to find out more about this brewery's range, thank you.
