Bottle at Woodies, Zwolle. Aroma is big passion fruit, fruity hops, citrus, tropical fruits, mango. Flavour is slightly sweetish and above moderate bitter. Body is medium. Nice big tropical fruits aroma, flavour can’t quite match it, very tasty.

Bottle. Blonde, hazy. Passion fruit, peppermint and hops in the aroma and flavor. Soft tart fruity notes. Kiwi. Pleasant.

On tap at BrewDog Soho with Harry. Red orange haze lasting white head. Redcurrant aroma and flavour and light raspberry. Red fruity easy drinking ipa. Bit false though fruit wise sweet.

Bottle 330ml. @ The Shnoodlepip, London. [ As Fierce Beer Granadilla Guerilla ].Unclear matt medium yellow orange colour with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, pale malt, caramel, moderate hoppy, citrus, passion fruit, tropical fruit. Flavor is moderate to light light heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, passion fruit, sweet msalt, tropical fruit, exotic fruits. Body is medium, texture is oily to watery, carbonation is soft. [20161016] 7-3-7-3-15

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines, Birmingham. Poured a hazy straw colour with a frothy white head. The aroma is yeast, grapefruit citrus. The flavour is moderate bitter light sour with a crisp light tart fruit, light spice, hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation.

Hazy golden beer, white head. Slightly sour, tangy citrus aroma. Tangy tropical fruit hit first, slight sourness again. Mellows out and sweetens a bit after that, becoming a touch breadier and drier in the aftertaste. Crisp and refreshing pale.

Fizzy, fruity, bit of sourness.

I have used ’granadilla’ (the yellow sweet-and-sour passion fruit species) regulary as a metaphor to describe aroma and taste of - particularly New England substyle - IPAs but this is the real thing: this Scottish IPA is effectively flavored with granadilla, not so far-fetched considering the similarities in flavor between certain New World hops and passion fruit, and considering other breweries have experienced with citrus (such as grapefruit) in IPA according to the same principle. Tasted this one from tap at Billie’s Bierkafétaria in Antwerp. Very thick but regular, dense, tightly lacing, snow white head over an equally cloudy peach blonde beer with somewhat ochre-like hue. Aroma exhales fruitiness in a very strong way, with hints of not just ordinary (maracujá) passion fruit and more sourish granadilla, but also green kiwi, mango, pitaya, lime and tamarillo to even tomato, next to biscuit, pine (a bit out of place here), dried yellow grapefruit peel, (fruit) yoghurt, sourdough and dried flowers. Utterly fruity onset, passion fruit to the extreme - the actual granadilla strongly resonating with the developing New World hop character, some lime-like sourness and mango-like sweetness, very soft carbo with smooth but ’fluffy’ mouthfeel, biscuity basis underneath, long aromatic finish with again a ton of passion fruit, even providing a certain strawberry-like sweetness, clashing a bit with the grapefruity, bittering character of the hops. Weird concoction: I have nothing against cloudy fruit IPAs, I even find them a great way of further exploring the potential of both IPA and fruit beer, but this one puzzled me a bit, something doesn’t seem right. It is as if the actual sweet and sour character of the granadilla (juice, I guess) contrasts too much with the bitterness of the Summit and even the piney and grapefruity aroma of the Chinook. Very interesting beer for sure, but I don’t think I’d be able to enjoy more than one of this. As for style: West Coast IPA only in its hop varieties, which I would tend to associate indeed with classic West Coast IPAs, but the addition of granadilla, the extreme fruitiness resulting from it and the cloudy appearance link it to the younger New England IPA substyle - a kind of hybrid of both sides of the States, it seems. Not sure if this is such a good idea, I think this beer would have worked much better with softer and much more aroma-forward hoppiness and more delicately fruity, ’tropical’ varieties (Galaxy, perhaps, and / or Mosaic) to accentuate the granadilla, rather than ’attacking’ it with more classically pine- and grapefruit-oriented hops.
