Hofstetten’s Granitbier (granite beer) has been a household name in the region for years. When we decided we wanted to continue building on the “Granite” theme in 2008, the logical next step, of course, was to make it stronger! Hence, our GRANIT BOCKBIER.
The beauty was that we already had everything we needed in our brewhouse from 1929.
Primary fermentation takes place in 120-year-old granite vats, thus connecting this beer to its Stone Age roots.
The Granitbock’s unmistakable flavor comes from granite stones that are heated over an open fire until red hot and then thrown into the beer, caramelizing the sugar in the wort. Once it cools, our classically cultured yeast is then added to the vats.
Though the process is quite laborious, the resulting beer is laden with caramel and roasted malt aromas unlike those in any other bock. We then lager the beer for another 6 months in our vaulted lager keller and fill it into bottles without any further processing.
We leave it unfiltered to ensure none of the wonderful flavors developed during the brewing process are lost. For the beer lover with a cool dark place in their homes, this beer can easily be aged for another 3 years.

Deep mahogany colour, small yellow-beige head. Second half of bottle yields a collection of dangerous stealth UFO's. Dark, warm malts, bready, chestnuts, dark brown candi, hint at green leaves. Dry bitterish-sweet, chestnuts husks, dark bread, dark caramel, toffee. Well-bodied, slick, even a bit chewy. Not very carbonated. In the end, very good Doppelbock, just off-side of classic, which is even better.

Gut.

Thin beige head left a cover on a still dark oak oil slick. Boozy aroma with syrup, molasses, Christmas cake & raisin. Full bodied, oily slick & smooth o RR the tongue with lingering greasy back. Concentrated fruit juice, raspberry, strong desk spirits, red wine, sherry & grape tastes.

750ml bottle [2012 vintage]. Clear, reddish, dark chestnut colour with slightly late awakening, small, frothy to creamy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, off-white to beige head. Sweet-ish, caramel malty aroma, notes of caramel, hints of burnt caramel, malt lozenge, a touch of nougat and toffee. Taste is sweet-ish, caramel malty, slightly nutty, notes of caramel, hints of toffee, malt lozenge, a touch of nougat; creamy texture, smooth, soft and silky palate. Pretty good.

Bottle from Dranken Geers, Oostakker. Pours hazy dark brown with a small, foamy, tan head; little lacing. Inviting aroma of candied banana, plum, molasses, candi sugar, vanilla, crème brûlée, milk chocolate, cookie dough, apple cake, licorice & syrup. It tastes medium to heavy malty sweet, lots of plum, banana, caramel & dough, and light herbal bitter, countering a cloying sweetness, with hints of 'spicy licorice', even some toast. Dryish, herbal hoppy finish, spicy, lingering syrup & bread/dough, with a dash of warming liqueur alcohol. Medium body, syrupy texture, soft carbonation. Extremely enjoyable, a real winter warmer...

Flosch'n: Hazy, deep ruby-amber coloured, small off-white foamy layer; toffee in themoderate to solid sweet caramelly-toasty and fruity nose with a delicate malty bitterness underneath; pretty solid sweet and slightly bitter flavour, nearly full bodied, not so soft; sweet vinous and caramelly finish with a slight alcohol-burn in the aftertaste. Well, Austria is not Franconia...
