Beret is as artistic as those who wear its namesake cap. Our brewers developed a silky, full-bodied wheat ale which we began fermenting with our house yeast strain. To finish the fermentation, we added our collection of barnyard bacteria, intended to slowly sour the ale, bringing out a slight funk and refreshing piquancy. Finally, a small dose of pureed raspberries were added for just a hint of fruity tannins, putting the berry in Beret.

Pretty good stuff. Neat idea how they took a mildly sour beer with a little funk, tweaked it with a bito’ raspberry and ended up with a killer brew.

Cloudy, not much head. Nose has brett, with a berryish fruit, a tart dry kettle finish, but with wood. Quality pivo.

Bottle at Farmhouse Fest, pours a cloudy bright orange with a small white head. Aroma brings out lots of raspberries upfront, with a little brett. Flavour is very fruity, with lots of bright raspberries, some wild yeast and light wild yeast. Complex and well-rounded. Excellent.

Draft at Mellow. Pours a clear, light copper with a finger of champagne-like foam. Lots of raspberry in the nose with some faint ume. Soft carbonation. Clean, honey and lemon with young berry tartness. Oaky creaminess on the edges and booze hidden really well. Nicely played.

Super hazy and glowing deep copper and bronze coloured body with a very thin off-white head that fades quickly. Aroma of sour mash, berries, funk, yeast and a small amount of citrus - very nice and complex. Medium-bodied; Assertive effervescence along with a robust sour grape and funk flavour with some mellow wheat, a hint of raspberries and a little herbal note near the end make this exciting and complex, while still being very easy-to-drink and mellow. Aftertaste shows more of the fruit beer side of things with hints of saison without being as nearly wild or sour as I expected. Still, a solid complexity and rich sweetness make this go down very easily while packing a lot of punch with a higher ABV and bunches of sour funk as well. Overall, worth trying if you can find this relatively easily without spending a ton of money or by buying a large format bottle if you don’t care for the style too much. I sampled this sixteen ounce pour on draught from Whole Foods in Pentagon City (Arlington), Virginia on 24-April-2017 for US$6,00 sampled at the end of my driveway.
