F: big, white, not long lasting. C: deep gold, clear. A: sugary fruity lemonade, hint of tequila, malty. T: sugary, artificial orange, cactus, lemon, medium body, normal carbonation, very sweet and chemical, bad, not like a beer, 0,5l can from Carrefour in Etterbeek in Brussels.

Bottle from the Carrefour supermarket around the corner. Apparently Carrefour tries to cash in on the incomprehensible commercial success of Desperados and had their own version made, with a print on the bottle depicting a saguaro cactus so as to emphasize the link with Mexico. In any case: tequila-flavoured lager from a cheap, uncoloured longneck bottle - this is bound to go wrong. Medium thick, cobweb-lacing, snow white head retaining relatively well, over a cristal clear pure golden beer with low fizz. Aroma is dominated by the dreaded ’lightstruck’ (ammonia or stale cat pee) effect upon opening, as expected, and once it fades, I am left with odours of orange lemonade (Orangina), complete with that horrible ascorbid acid and a truckload of refined sugar, under which a more ’beery’ layer of aromas is still detectable (sweet graininess and, more than anything else, malt sugar, as in many a cheap pale lager); I could imagine tequila playing a certain role here as well, but not more so than in Desperados, i.e. in a very artificial, chemical kind of way. Taste is obviously extremely sugary and artificially citrusy, sticking to the teeth, not unlike Fanta Orange but a bit less offensively sugary perhaps; carbo is medium, mouthfeel is thin and lean. I get a subtle trace of sweet maltose underneath, as a reminder that this is still beer-based, but otherwise the play of ascorbid acidity paired with cloying sugar sweetness continues undisturbed, way into the finish, where a certain kind of ’chalkiness’ appears as well, only adding insult to injury. i get practically no tequila flavour (fortunately perhaps, I hate it). Not sure if this is worse than Desperados, only a side by side tasting could solve this issue, but with so many decent to excellent craft beers around, I will happily leave that to someone else. I thoroughly hate artificially flavoured standard pale lagers - they are probably my least preferred style, and this one fits the picture in all respects. It seems to be even sweeter (in an unhealthy, artificial, sugary way) than Desperados - making it even less attractive for me. This kind of ’beers’ should be eradicated.

500 ml. can sampled. Purchased @ Carrefour. Looks like a knock-off of Desperados with a hilariously bad label. Lightly hazy golden, faintly sparkling, little in the way of chemical head. Nose is huge soda, artificial very sweet tequila, lots of artificial sweetener, pure artificial sweetener & hugely chemical lemonade. Taste is oily vegetable, chemical washing powder sweetness, vegetable, cooked cabbage chemical artificial, white sugar, artificial sweet tequila chemical cocktail,… Very oily body,… Okay for a tequila, chemical heav flavoured pale lager.

Canned at PBF. Clear pale golden, minimal head. Smells like artificial tequila extract. Lemony washing up liquid on sticky syrup. Glues my teeth together and leaves a foul flavour behind.
