Sunday Morning Stout, a barrel aged stout from brewmaster Chris Wilson and his team at Weyerbacher. Aptly named too, as SMS is a stout aged in bourbon barrels with coffee. The best part of waking up.

Sampled on draft at Vintage Estate this beer poured thick and black with a medium sized foamy dark brown head that left excellent lacing. The aroma was chocolate and whiskey. The flavor was bitterish with notes of anise, chocolate, whiskey and red wine. Boozy but not distractingly so. Long boozy whiskey and chocolate finish. Thick and smooth body. Its good but beers of this type usually score higher from me.

Bottle: Poured a deep black color stout with a large dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of floral coffee notes with some nice vanilla and bourbon notes with some black chocolate notes also noticeable. Taste is a great mix between some bourbon and vanilla notes with some floral coffee notes with some residual sugar notes and some roasted malt with some creamy black chocolate notes. Body si full with oily-like texture and good carbonation with some warming alcohol notes. Extremely well brewed with good complexity and good drinkability.

12 oz bottle. The beer is black with a thin dark brown head. Some lacing. The head dissipates to a ring of bubbles pretty quickly. The aroma is rich and chocolatey with a bunch of roasty coffee on top. Mapley caramel sweetness. Light barrel booziness. Some vanilla and bourbony molasses. Milk chocolate. Nice, sweet, full taste. Lots of milk chocolate with a gentle but dark roast flavor. Finish is roast and syrup. Very rich. I could stand to have the roast toned down a bit but it’s still very nice. Full, chewy feel. Creamy. Strong roast bitterness. Very enjoyable stout.
