Sunday Morning Stout, a barrel aged stout from brewmaster Chris Wilson and his team at Weyerbacher. Aptly named too, as SMS is a stout aged in bourbon barrels with coffee. The best part of waking up.

Bottle thanks to my cousin, JohnB. Wow! And itโ€™s Sunday morning too. Except for a weak head, this beer is outstanding. Smooth, tasty, welcoming aroma, sticky mouthfeel, finishes equal parts sweet and bitter. Warmth comes late. Great stuff

12 ounce bottle. Pours a jet black color with a large light brown head. Looks awesome. A big sweet vanilla and huge coffee nose. This is of course a huge coffee beer, a sort of sweet sugary coffee, lactose, vanilla, the bourbon is pretty light especially in that it fits into the coffee profile. Some dark fruit, light hot whiskey. Pretty drinkable. Definitely a big beer. Very nice.

Pitch black coloured body with a very dark brown glow and a thick deep rich dark brown head that fades to a single centimetre tall. Aroma of ridiculously rich and strong coffee, roasted malt, dark chocolate, mushrooms, chicory, vanilla, oak and some whiskey as well - very strong smelling. Full-bodied; Super rich flavour of nice roasted malt with a velvety texture coupled with some lactose, cherries, caramel sweetness, mushrooms, earth, coffee, oak and some burnt sugar notes as well. Aftertaste is rich and very strong with bitterness a big factor - the coffee and rich chocolate really come through and leave the mouth very bitter. Overall, a nice rich Imperial Stout with a lot of coffee, roasted malt and dry oaky/barrel flavours throughout. I sampled this thirty-two ounce growler fill from Whole Foods in Tysonโ€™s Corner (Falls Church), Virginia on 10-March-2016 for US$9,00 sampled a few hours later at home in Washington on 10-March-2016.

Growler from Joe Canalโ€™s in Lawrenceville, NJ. Jet black pour topped by a dense creamy tan head. Roasted malt nose is full of bourbon and coffee notes. Big sweet roasted malt upfront. Espresso, bittersweet cocoa, bourbon and boozy warmth are there for the taking. Intense and memorable, with notes of licorice oak and vanilla. Wow, this is a big beer.

About as black as beer can be, dark brown head. Nose is syrupy, molasses, dark chocolate and coffee. Coffee is more prominent flavor, with some strong roast behind it and a full heavy finish, showing some alcohol burn. I can hardly notice any bourbon barrel elements here. Itโ€™s generally good for what it is, uses coffee rather well, but the era of such beers is over.

Bottle. Pours inky opaque black, small dark brown head, dissipates to a small ring with some lacing. Aroma is heavy ashtray, stake coffee, bourbon, cocoa, light bell pepper. Flavor is light plus sweet, light plus bitter. Coffee is stale and rubbed with pepper, bourbon adds loads of heat but little depth. Medium body.
