The blonde in this appropriately named Vals Paterke series of 'fake' abbey beers, bottle from the Achelse Kluis. Thick and frothy, tightly membrane-lacing, snow white, mousy, very slowly opening but otherwise very stable head on an equally misty, straw-golden blonde beer with vague olive greenish tinge at the sides. Rather simple and subdued aroma of light banana, breakfast cereals, dried out white bread, raw potato juice, parsnip purée, cooked green beans, rain falling on hot stones, clove, coriander seed but faintly so, dried camomile, grass, vague touch of dried orange peel in the distance. Crisp, fruity onset, restrained in sweetness, hints of apple peel, unripe banana and unripe hard peach, sourish accent enhanced by very fizzy, sharp and minerally carbonation, otherwise remaining rather neutral; slick cereally and slightly white-bready, but mostly grainy maltiness, a little bit soapy at the edges due to - likely - coriander, ending dryish with a floral hop note and an even more floral, yet still subtle camomile flower effect, in all mildly bitterish and crisp, with a yeasty-bready accent. Grainy pale maltiness prevails here, everything remains very subdued and even a bit 'neutral' - but I guess the intention was to create something as close to (classic) Pilsener or, more generally speaking, pale lager as possible and in that sense this is not even so bad. It does not descend into overt spiciness nor overt sweetness, retaining an overall feeling of a decent, German-inspired, 'clean' pale lager, which deserves some credit I suppose. Typical old school 'Limburgian', i.e. German-influenced beer, but too neutral perhaps, with some less pleasant vegetable-like accents.

Fles thuis geprobeerd met Roelzie. Het is een helder oranjekleurig bier met een medium schuimkraag. Het heeft weinig geur, een beetje moutig. De smaak is moutig en in de verte wat gedroogd fruit.

Bottle @ home. Clear orange color, average sized quite quickly diminishing white head. Aroma is quite faint, don’t get much more than a certain malty base. A little dough in there as well maybe. Taste malts, a touch of dried fruits, decently bitter. Not very outspoken but no flaws either. Decent.
