La Luna Rossa was created with an initial sour beer which underwent 2 years of mixed fermentation (lactic bacteria, brettanomycetes). Then we added cherries for at least 6 months and we blended the new beer with a small part of other beers. La Luna Rossa is an ale that can remember a Kriek or a Flemish Red Ale. It has an extraordinary complexity associated with a strong character. For lovers of this kind of beers it is certainly hard to forget.

Bottle as shown thanks to Chris. Pours a cloudy clear brown with medium frothy white head that diminishes to nothing. The aroma is a strong oak, funk, cherry skin. Thin mouthfeel with nice tart cherry, strong oak tannin with nice sourness throughout. Very good.

3/VIII/13 - 33cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker) @ home - BBE: 2050 - 2010 vintage (2013-685) Thanks to Erwin for sharing the bottle!

Clear red brown beer, small irregular bubbles, not a real head, dissipates immediately. Aroma: red sour fruits, wood tannins, red wine, earthy, tobacco, funky. MF: no carbon, medium body. Taste: soft sour start, red fruits, citric, lacto bacillus, bit sweet, earthy touch. Aftertaste: sweet and sour, floral notes, very citric acidity, wood notes, sour burns in the throat, earthy. A bit too sour, but pretty complex and interesting.

Bottled, No 3460, cuvee 2010, large sample. Pours a hazy copper color, almost no head, some lacing. Aroma of cherries, red wine, soft oak wood, some caramelly notes, hint of vanilla. Wonderfully complex. Quite sour taste, citric acid mostly and slight lactic acid, fruity sweetness. Actually has quite a sticky palate. Wow, each sip brings more. Great complexity, lovely sourness. It’s like a blend between a sour kriek, a sour flemish red and a hint of big barley wine. Amazing.

A dark reddish brown beer without carbonation and without head. The nose of cherries, berries, medium sourness and balanced sweetness, some balsamico. Taste is medium sour, quite high sweetness, cherries, barrel and earthyness. Medium bodied, no carbonation, slightly sugary and sticky. Quite sweet and berry juice like sour ale, not totally convincing, not very sophisticated.
