Our Black IPA fuses speciality malts with a tropical punch bowl of new world hops to deliver a contradictory yet cultured concoction. A classically ‘pale’ aroma and quenchingly fruity palate belies a broodingly dark and deceptive appearance. Can a beer be both ‘black and pale’? Time to consult the Magic 8 Ball.

Poured from keg at Grove Inn. Almost black as pitch. Shiny naked surface, dotted spots on the glass. Aroma of roasted, earthy malts. Dark fruity and dark honeyed flavours alongside coffee grounds leading to a long-lived ending of malty bitterness. Well bodied. A lovely, tasty drink (Huddersfield 09.07.2014).

Spuyten Duyvil, Brooklyn tap: Pours black with a beige head. Aroma is citrus, spice, chocolate, and fresh coffee. Taste is quite fruity with a moderate amount of hop bitterness. The backbone of the roasty malts blends in well with the IPA character. A well-executed example of the style.

Keg at York Tap. Pours near-black, thick tan head. Aromas of roasted coffee and orange, some pine. Big hop flavour, lots of roast bitterness too. Lots going on, rich mouthfeel. Finishes with a lingering orange bitterness. Very nice.

Keg @ Port Street Beer House, Manchester. Pours black with intense roasted malts, tongue-numbing liquorice and a little too much vegetal notes for me. Couldn’t get much of the tropical fruits unfortunately but still this is an evil tasting beer with lots going on, like a stormy black cloud.

From my backlog. Black colour with a dense off-white head, good duration and lacing. Aroma has notes of fresh hops with citrus hints and some roasty notes. Flavor is bittery with resins and pine notes, moderate licorice in the finasl with a good bitterness with medium duration.

Tap at Bar Animal. Herbal, leafy hop aroma, pleasant roast. Black, offwhite head. Old pine cones, needles, soapy roast, some umami, sticky hop resins, slightly vegetal. I am amazed how much the roast gets buried. Too heavy on the resinny hops for my taste.

Keg @ Old Gate, Hebden Bridge. Extremely dark but not black with a very thin head. It’s instantly recognisable as a Black IPA with plenty of tropical fruits in its rather fizzed up texture. Its aroma is its most complex part combining fruity hops and roasted malt.

Keg at Rutland Arms, Sheffield. Juicy, fruity, mouth watering bitterness. Beautifully balanced roast malt character. Silly easy to drink. Could have caved myself in on this...
