The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bottle. Hazy golden body with a frothy white head. Aroma of grapefruit, toasted grain, floral hops, dough, dry grain. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. It finishes lightly sweet and moderately to heavily bitter. Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation. Light astringency in the finish. Taste of citrus, light resin, toasted grain. Maybe its reputation led to higher expectations than I should have had, but I was not wowed. Lots of ipas out there like this.

Bottle, far too long after bottling date. But as it is what it is, it’ll get a go anyway. Pours golden, with a creamy head. Aroma is unaggressive, yet very hoppy tropical notes with apricots, and sweet roasted malts with bread and toffee. Medium to full body, with soft carbonation. Flavour is hoppy tropical notes with apricots, mango and citrusy orange peel, as well as a nice caramelly malty back with bread and toffee. Lingering sweet hoppy finish. Solid IPA, which no doubt is even better a couple of months fresher.

355 ml bottle, from the Norwegian importer. ABV is 7%. Deep golden colour, nearly clear, moderate white head. Pleasant aroma of fruity hops (citrus, tropical fruits), also notes of pine. Distinct hoppy flavour on a background of slightly sweet malts, notes of grapefruit, pine needles and resin. Bitter finish, very bitter aftertaste.

Appearance is hazy amber, with a thick creamy beige head, which clings to the glass. Aroma- orange, pineapple, creamy malt, tropical fruit juice, pine, hop resin. Yum. Taste- massive hop bitterness, orange peel, pineapple, juicy tropical fruit, pine, grapefruit, hop resins. Huge bitter fruit, but also there’s biscuity malt underpinning the whole thing. Mouthfeel is oily and clingy, hugely long bitter finish. Superb IPA.

Taste is malt caramel with tropical fruity, peach notes and grapefruit, resiny spice, earthy bitterness. Oily mouthfeel, medium bodied, soft carbonation, dry tangy bitter finish. Aggressively hoppy, very drinkable.
