Our RoggenWeizen is a twist of the renowned Bavarian Dunkelweizen, which is a dark wheat beer. Roggen is the German word for ’rye’ and weizen means ’wheat’. This beer is made with 20% wheat malt, 20% rye malt and is brewed with a special yeast that tends to stay in suspension, giving the beer its cloudy appearance. Bavarians are so convinced of the healthful qualities of this yeasty brew that doctors there are known to prescribe two Hefeweizens a day to feeble patients. The yeast used for this brew also imparts its unique spicy, clovey flavour. Some people even detect a slight banana flavour. All of these wacky flavours are the natural ’signature’ left by this specific yeast strain during its fermentation of the beer and no additional spices are added.

Cloudy amber color; small head. Nice aroma of rye and banana, delicate. The carbonation is too high; wheat/rye flavor, with moderate spiciness and light banana touch; correct to low bitterness; the body seems a bit weak. Not bad.

On tap at The Alibi Room, pours a hazy golden orange. Aroma of wheat, caramel, butterscotch, rye malt and some christmas spices. Flavour of ginger and other holiday spices, some butterscotch and rye. Decent.

Muddy chestnut colour. Fruity-spicy aroma with banana and pear. Flavour starts with banana, moves to a little toasty, earthy maltiness then spicy (cinnamon, clove), pearlike finish. Light rye notes in the finish. Moderate body, well-balanced. Following on their Dunkelweizen of old, this is one style they do very well.

They made this twice in the winter of 04 and the second time in march was much better than dec. These comments are for the first time I tried it, the second time I didn't make notes, but the rating reflects is for the latter batch. Heavily laden berry infused weizen that seems to follow the theme of many brewpubs that if you infuse a beer with berry malt extract people will buy it, especially around Christmas. Still not that bad
