Emphasizing that complexity of character can arise from simple elements, this ale is made with three malts and one hop. Its light amber color and slightly spicy malt character are derived from the use of German Dark Munich Malt and Rye Malt respectively. North American 2-row barley combines with the other grains to lay the foundation for the hop onslaught to come. Summit hops are used exclusively in the boil for bitterness, flavor and aroma but it doesn't end there. Post-fermentation dry hopping allows the 10% ABV monstrosity to gently coax the citrus rind and grapefruit aroma to join the 100 IBUs already present. This beer should greet you with a pungent citrus blast, provide a spicy yet round middle and finish with a brisk, clean bitterness.

Can: Pours cloudy, yellow-amber with a frothy, off-white head. Syrupy fruit aroma...tangerine/grapefruit. Malty...tropical fruit taste with a light, white pepper spiciness. Sweet....nicely done.

Keg @ Brewdog Birmingham. Pours a rusty orange, tequila creeps around a resinous pithy citrus character stealth-like. i’m not the biggest Mosaic or tequila fan but they seem to blend well here alongside a pronounced bitterness and sharp juiciness.

Tap at Brewdog Birmingham. Poured a clear medium amber with a long lasting frothy white head and clingy lace. The aroma is light grassy malt citrus hop. The flavour is medium bitter with a huge zesty lemon citrus, buttery barnyard, grass hop palate with a long bitter finish. Medium bodied with average carbonation. One of the very best imperial IPA’s I’ve ever had. This beer has everything!

Can from Mikkeller beer shop. Hazy amber with an off-white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, caramel and moderate hoppy - fruity and old hops. Flavor is quite sweet and rather bitter. Dry and rather bitter finish. 090514

tap - This brew pours orange with a lingering head that laces heavily. It has a rich citrus hop led aroma and some florals in the background. It has a huge, bitter flavor with ample citrus character and a big, full malt backbone. The carbonation is light. Overall it’s one of the best IIPAs I’ve had. I’m biased toward the style anyway, but beers like this one show that there’s more to a truly excellent IIPA then just piling on the hops.

Pours slightly cloudy, yellow-gold, with minimal head. Aroma of citrus, grass, and metal. Flavor is strongly grapefruity-citrus, with some malt sweetness underneath. Surprisingly smooth finish.

Canned 4-30-2010. I keep finding Impy IPAs that I should not be saving this long. Let’s open this and see if I can still do justice to it. The tab opens without the usual "pssht," but then the froth comes out. Not a gusher like my Belgians; I only missed a few drops. Once poured, there’s a short, porous, but pretty persistent head over a hazy, light range IPA body. Nose is still pretty sweet and citrussy, but there’s a bit of rubber in there. Nah, I ticked it up to 6 because the malt comes in once the rubber is driven off. Taste is still fully malty. Hops are there as a bit of orange juice on the side. Palate is nicely thick. There’s still some "off-ness" that I’m sure comes from my letting it sit far too long. Hops bitterness is subdued, and I still get the occasional note of rubber. But again, that’s my fault. My lesson here: Stop aging IPA’s! And yet, I’ve held onto a 120-Min for nearly 10 years in spite of myself.

Can, Brew Dog Shop. Dark amber pour with a small white head. Piney hop, citrus and sweet malt nose. Sweet, full, thick, boozy flavour with some very robust resinous hop bitterness and decent fruity notes. I’m a sucker for this style, and as such enjoyed this very much.
