STEENBRUGGE Tripel abbey beer is a golden-blond beer with a rounded malt character, a scented touch of hops, a warm, full flavour and a fruity, lightly smoked yeast aroma combined with the subtle Bruges “gruut” blend of herbs and spices.

Light orange golden colour, white head. Spicy fruity aroma, Belgian yeast, light malts. Spicy malty flavour, light bitter, light sweet. OK tripel, not very special.

Bottle 33cl. (Brabante Gran Triple). Dark amber hazy beer with abundant off-white head. Sweet malty aroma, also fruits, peach are present. The taste is medium sweet, caramel, with a soft carbonation and medium body. Not very hopped and suitable alcoholic final.

Whole Foods Market, DC 4-pack ($11): This is pretty cheap for a Belgian tripel and fortunately it is not a bad beer either. Pours an orange color with a loose white head. Aroma got some gruut, along with a few notes of wine, and plenty of fruitiness to be had. Taste is well-balanced. It is a sipping beer completely because of the mouthfeel. Rather on the sweet side, but not in a cloying way. Spices add a little extra bite to it. I didn’t detect any alcohol in the taste.

On tap in the Cafe De Engelbewaarder. Clear gold beer, good white head. Light crisp palate. Typical tripel sweetish malt but with a little pepper. Trace of fruit underneath. Served in good nick at the Engelbewaarder - much better than anywhere else I’ve had it in Holland or Belgium.

Bottle pale golden color, huge white head. Aroma of white pepper, summer fruits. Taste is plain malt, maybe some pepper. Plain.
