Legends date back to the 1800s when settlers to Muskoka encountered new and mysterious wildlife.

Brewed with heather tips, wild juniper berries and fresh sweet orange peel, this Beligan style beer is a nod to those sometimes bizarre accounts.

750ml bottle. Hazy, orangey deep golden colour with small to average, frothy, diminishing, off-white head. Sweet-ish, fruity yeasty and slightly spicy aroma, hints of orange and orange zest, a peppery yeasty touch, herbal overtones. Taste is moderately sweet malty and fruity, surpressed by dry herbal and zesty notes, a spicy, peppery yeasty touch. Well balanced, multifaceted, but overall mild in character.

Easily one of my favourite beers. 2013 vintage bottle, via LCBO, in a tulip. Warm blond/coppery colour. White head that flattens out rather quickly. The palate is a full creamy mouthfeel, with moderate carbonation. Taste is a slightly sweet, light cream, with breadiness, and a moderate citrus. An excellent beer.

I gotta admit I’m a sucker for large wine-style beer bottles with high alcohol percentages printed on the side. Gotta get these in before I head back up to the dry north, it’s always binge and purge when you’re up there I tells ya. This is also a 2013 vintage if’n indeed that matters. This pours with a nice foggy orange body with no bubbling, and a solid yellow-white head. Very appealing so far! The aroma is barnyard funk and orange peels with just a hint of sugariness. The flavour is like a belgian strong ale infused with grass, a good mix of the heavy stuff with some earthy notes. A little cloying and sweet on the palate however. This is an interesting and eclectic beer, hints of North American ingredients in what seems to be a Belgian style ale. It’s highly drinkable nonetheless.

Keg at Kick Off, Waterloo, Ontario, 28th April 2013. This is a quite a tasty beer, definitely some Belgian yeast notes to this, a little citrus. Too fizzy for more palate, OK

(750mL bottle from LCBO) Pours a clear gold with a mid-sized frothy white head that left lace. Aroma of honey, pale malt, pale pit fruit, some orange and herbs. Flavour starts fairly dry and crackery with a bit of yeast, and then sweetens up with candy sugar, orange oil, white wine and a big helping of herbs, grassy but also a bit coniferous and spicy. Finish is quite dry, alcohol, minty vegetation and faint pepper. Palate is fairly thin for the style with reasonably soft carbonation and alcohol not very hidden for the style. A lot going on here, this is a very interesting pale Belgian strong, but I don’t find it the most drinkable either.

Bouteille 750ml (vintage 2012).

Big bottle with flip top, from the LCBO. Pours a clean golden colour with a big white bubbly head that stays long and creates good lacing. Beautiful fresh hop aromas with notes of citrus, spices and yeast. Very smooth mouthfeel with no traces of burn (alcohol is very well-blended). Citrus taste with oranges, grapefruits, limes. Nice grass, spices and hints licorice. What a great brew from Muskoka (which seems to be adding better and better beers all the time - seasonals). Keep it up !
