Bottle 0,33ltr: Amber coloured Pale Ale without the India, the could name the beer better as Brigand Speciale. But this is a neverteless a good beer, with hints of caramel.

Tap @ Café Morshuis Albergen. Dark amber color. Raspberry yoghurt and flowers in the aroma. Oily hopbitter grassay flavor with raspberry yoghurt. Earthy hopbitter buttery finish. First signs of diacetyl, otherwise OK, but is this really an IPA?

From old rating (2011). Hazy blond colour, white foam. Caramel, dusty bitter hops, chemical bitterness. Not very IPA-like.

After Belgian micro breweries had succesfully adopted American-style IPAs, some of the larger family brewers followed their example and started making more mainstream examples, in an attempt to introduce the style to a larger audience. Belgium has a long tradition of adopting foreign beer styles so this might just work, but unfortunately this attempt by Van Honsebrouck failed, as it has been abolished again meanwhile. It had a thick, creamy, off-white head and pure amber colour with pretty sparkling; an aroma of grassy and slightly citrussy hops, walnuts, caramel, peach, iron, mango, pepper, cloves and orange peel; and a fresh, soft fruity taste with citrus sharpness, a sweetish, honeyish malt basis and a herbal and grassy hop bitterness, sprawling over tongue and throat, but less assertively than the more small-scaled examples from the micro breweries. Shame it didn’t work, as I am all for getting the Belgian beer drinking public more familiar with the style.

3/VI/14 - 33cl bottle from De Zytholoog/Bierloods (Adegem) @ home - BB: III/10 (2014-587)
Clear deep amber beer, creamy irregular off-white head, very stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: sweet, very floral, bit soapy, no, very soapy, some honey, caramel, metallic, bit oxidized. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: some citrus, pretty sourish and refreshing, grassy, then bitter hops. Aftertaste: malty touch, some caramel, still pretty hoppy, little sweet, bit metallic and a bitter ending. This one has aged very well! I liked it.

2009 Vintage. Last one ever made. 33 cl. bottle sampled @ Kulminator. Dark amber with an off-white head. Nose is slightly herbal, heavy on the sweetness, lots of caramel malts, sweet spices, some oxidation notes but not too heavy. Taste is back to the sweetness, some oxidation, lots of candy notes, caramel, slight herbs, sugary, plenty of sugar, basically nothing in the way of bitterness. Body is still pretty malty, this is pretty solid for a 4 year old IPA, I debate just how much of an IPA this was to begin with, probably just a Belgian Ale with a smidgeon more of hops, that is all.

One of the very first IPA’s I ever had, perhapes even the first. Brigand was early in catching up with the IPA-trend. I used to like it back then, but know I’ve tasted much better specimens.
