A Belgian style sour red ale created by Greg Noonan in the early 1990's. The "Spittin' Devil" is a Flemish style Vermont Sour Red Ale brewed with Brettanomyces yeasts that produce complex sour-cherry and barnyard flavors. The Belgian style brew is sour mashed and acidified for a tart, challenging flavor. We were one of the first US breweries to brew this old-world style!

Growler. Hazy amber golden with a creamy off-white head. Unclean, tart aroma. Medium body, a little low in carbonation, some caramel and less pleasant notes of manure. Oddly unclean. 110709

Growler shared by someone near the end of RBSGβ09 Grand Tasting, I wrote down popory but that doesnβt seem to be a user on here, so whoever you were, thank you. It pours a dark copper with a slightly sticky head. Aroma is very vegetal with earthy, deep, sticky malts with a tender acetic quality. Flavor is lightly sticky red cherry with tart hints and those light vegetal/earthy touches. Weird stuff, not to off the style as there were other Flanders Red type brews in the same vain at this tasting as well.

A dark amber ale with a thin lacing off white head. Avery nice oude bruin aroma with definite Brett and cherry, wood and horseblanket. In mouth, epsom salts, light acidity, and ground cherries, a bit astringent. A very classy yet light sour ale. On tap at brewpub, July 20, 2008.
