Notes from March 2009 Growler fill off a cask at Bowery Whole Foods. Murky lemon-honey body. A wisp of foam on a violent pour into my Ommegang anniversary glass. Sulfurously scrumpy nose. Green apples, ginger, white grapes, cherry skins, oak, & butter, & yeast. Faint metallic presence. A whole lot like some funked cider. Juicy, mildly acidic body. More sourness from lime then lemon. Unripened mango kind of flavor, skin & all. Some vinegar. Quite noticeable amount of butter. A leafy bitter note cuts in a bit. Soured milk & wheat on the finish. A little chalk in there too. Just a touch of life left on the first couple pours, but I didn't suffer the last glass of the jug in the morning any worse. I think this beer would cut a little better with some loftier carbonation. The big buttery note did cut my enthusiasm a bit, but sours are so easy, especially a young one like this, with such a mild temperament. I vote to blend it. $26 after tax for a half gallon with my own glass. I didn't go out tonight. It was a nice treat. :)

Cask @ Ginger Man poured into an Imperial Pint (awesome!!). Has the agitated beer, bubbly with no substance small head that comes off a cask. But it has a beautiful hazy, glowing, orange-golden color. Aroma is bretty, lemony, and sour, mmm I like. Its very strong on the tangy, tart lemony brett, which reminds me a lot of young Canitllon lambic. Taste is not as strong but the lemony brett really kicks in at the end of the flavor. Its lightly drying and lots of tart, sweet-less miscellaneous berries sprinkled throughout. Definitely reminds of kegged young Cantillon gueze. Has that undercarbonated cask mouthfeel. I would really love to see the final product when these get blended and bottled in the future.

On tap thanks to the people at the Bruery. Awesome beer! Pours with a hazy golden body with a small, white head that leaves good lace. Aroma is sour and floral with honey, oak, and a nice Cantillon like funk. Taste is sour with citrus and wood, with a little funk. Dry with lively carbonation. Up there with RR Temptation (which I had earlier that day).

Cask and Spuyten Duyvil - cloudy straw color, almost completely still - nose of peach skins, tropical fruits, mild acidity, subtle, young funkiness - the flavor is tangy and lemony up front, followed by peach and pineapple - tart, but not quite sour, with a very mellow leathery character - quite refreshing and easy-drinking for a sour, which is a nice change of pace (it’s nice to have a sour you can drink an entire glass of) - the chardonnay comes through quite a bit in the finish, and the tropical fruits come back from underneath the young lambic-ish elemtents - an acetic kick on the back end reminds you what the beer is supposed to be - the bugs still have a lot of room to develop here, but I’m a fan on this young.
