Blonde Weizenbock

Richly golden and decadent in flavor, this Blonde Weizenbock is an amalgamation of two German styles, the pale wheat, spice and fruit character of a classic weissbier and the velvety smoothness and strength of a Weizenbock. A favorite of our brewers for many years, this rare brew is strong yet lively and full of character.

CBC @Sam Adams-on tap-pours a thin white head and cloudy orange color. Aroma is clove, light malt/wheat, light fruit. Taste is clove, light malt/wheat, light fruit-apricot/sweet. Syrupy mouth feel.

BCTC’08. This was the only non-sour beer I was interested in at the fest. The second beer I tried. Aroma is very ester-y and lots of sweetness. The combination produces some nose prickling banana puree and sugar cane. Taste is similar. Its an "esters and sweetness gone wild" type of brew. What could probably be considered the first Imperial Hefe. Fortunately, I like that type of beer. Reign in the sweetness a little but, give it some more refinement and then you have a real winner.

AOBF 2004 Draught. Probably my second or third favorite at the festival. Pours a deep peach/apricot orange with some light rusty brown hues on the edges. Small yellow-beige head, moderately hazy. Aroma of rich sweet yellow fruits, caramel, wheat and yeast. Flavor is immediately intense. Sweet, succulent caramel and wheat, with a balancing sharpness coming from the big fruit esters. The yeast apparency, which is like a mix between sour german yeast and belgian yeast adds a very unique element to this beer. Towards the end, it dries out a bit and gets very creamy with some vanilla cream flavors making their way in. Finish is pretty quick and clean, surprisingly, with lots of apple-like flavor and almost a cidery feel to it. I really enjoyed the mix of fruit, yeast, wheat and malt at the start. Even though it is a bit too sweet, I thought the flavor was very interesting. Body is full, tending to medium on the finish.
