Yearly, ending in 2017, we brewed Fluxus to celebrate the anniversary of our first beer sold—July, 1995. The name Fluxus is Latin for “continuous change” and in the spirit of change, every year we brew Fluxus with a different recipe.

Allagash Fluxus is so named because it is the first beer brewed in our new brewery. Fluxus marks the change and growth of Allagash Brewing Company, and our passage from the corner of our original building to a new, state of the art brewery. Brewed with Belgian Pilsner Malt and 25% Rye malt, the beer is full-bodied with a spicy, herbal taste. A floral note arises with the addition of Yarrow, which is a flowering plant that was historically used as an alternative to hops. The 10% abv beer is hopped with Warrior and Brewers Gold which impart a subtle bitterness. Finally Fluxus, like all our beers, undergoes a second fermentation, the methode champenoise, by which we naturally carbonate our beer in the bottle.

(Bottle 75 cl) Courtesy of BrianK. Hazy golden with an off-white head. Sweetish herbal aroma. Quite full-bodied, sweetish herbal with an abundance of pale malts. Sticky - almost fat texture. Very subdued bitterness with a somewhat astringent, herbal finish. 190408

Blind tasting at Papsoes place, another great session, thanks Henrik! Beer #29: Pours hazy yellow to orange with fully diminished white head. Lime to citrusy hops aroma. Flavour is light caramel malt nicely blended with a delicate citrusy hoppy flavour. Light yeasty touch into the finish followed by a nice lingering hops finish.

Pours clear gold with a white head. Some good lace. Spicy malty aroma that carries some earthiness to it. Spicy and sweet, but a bit one-dimensional. Moderate body, .

Bottle courtesy of Unclemattie: Poured a deep orangey/beige color ale with a large foamy head with great retention and some lacing. Aroma comprised a spicy yeast note with some spices mix and deep Belgian malt. Taste consisted in full Belgian malt with some sweet notes which were well balance with spicy yeast notes and some nice spices mix. Full body with some great carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very good overall but there seams to be lacking something in here.

Pours hazy amber into a tulip. White micro head with excellent retention leaves sheet lacing as it slowly recedes to coat surface. Sour aromatic aromas. Smooth and creamy/crisp with light caramel and yeast. Spicy, lasting alcohol burn.

Shared but notalush. This beer is all yarrow baby (what the heck is that? people keep tell me it’s an herb, great that helps). Aroma is of course herbal and grassy with hints of sweet Belgian yeastiness (light honey, dough) and flowery. Taste is again lightly sweet yeastiness but much less herbal-ness in general. It’s not a bland beer but its close. Just a decent Belgian Ale with an herbal ascent. Have no idea where the 10% is coming from.

Man, these Allagash beers just keep getting more expensive - and, like an idiot, I still buy them - oh, well - shared in good company (you all had better have gotten a rating out of this!) - hazy golden beer, with a fizzy head of large bubbles - aroma of honey sweetness, floral/herbal notes, apparent pils malt - the flavor is initially quite honey sweet, but a strong bitterness swells up and squashes it - not quite a hop bitterness, but more like a dry, herbal character - the beer gets pretty chalky along with this bitter herbal quality, and what little sweetness is left behind combines with this to make the beer taste a bit like chewable children’s tylenol - bone dry finish - and something about this beer started making my tongue numb - weird - I’m not sure what yarrow tastes like, but if it tastes anything like the herbal flavor in this beer, I can say with some certainty that yarrow is GROSS - just not a very pleasant experience - I’d say I’ve given up on Allagash, but we all know I’m far too foolish to stick to that.
