Yearly, ending in 2017, we brewed Fluxus to celebrate the anniversary of our first beer sold—July, 1995. The name Fluxus is Latin for “continuous change” and in the spirit of change, every year we brew Fluxus with a different recipe.

Allagash Fluxus is so named because it is the first beer brewed in our new brewery. Fluxus marks the change and growth of Allagash Brewing Company, and our passage from the corner of our original building to a new, state of the art brewery. Brewed with Belgian Pilsner Malt and 25% Rye malt, the beer is full-bodied with a spicy, herbal taste. A floral note arises with the addition of Yarrow, which is a flowering plant that was historically used as an alternative to hops. The 10% abv beer is hopped with Warrior and Brewers Gold which impart a subtle bitterness. Finally Fluxus, like all our beers, undergoes a second fermentation, the methode champenoise, by which we naturally carbonate our beer in the bottle.

750 c&c from bu11zeye. Thanks much for this! Pours orange gold with a transient wite head. Aroma of light stone fruit and grape must. Full bodied. Mild carb. Flavor is sort of tripel crossed with barley wine - with spice/must. Aged very well.

Hazy amber beer. Dry frothy palate. Immediate vegetable spice that dominates the creamy malt. A bit like ginger but it’s not ginger! Frothy in the mouth, it finishes dry with some warmth. As so often with Allagash - interesting but not quite inspiring.

Bottle @ home, courtesy of Glouglouburp. Thanks so much, Dany! Cloudy, a touch reddish, orange appearance with a pretty good sized, cream colored head. Floral, tea, herbal hoppy, orange citrusy, Belgian yeasty aroma. Tangy orange citrusy, floral, herbal hoppy, dry, somewhat spicy, Belgian yeasty flavor. Pretty tasty beer that’s actually held up quite well. Thanks again Dany!

750 ml. Deep golden body verging on amber/orange. Creamy white head. The aroma is sweet and spicy with notes of candy sugar, clove, raisins, honey. A hint of banana and alcohol. The flavor is moderately to heavily sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes moderately sweet and moderately bitter. The thick, sweet body gives way to a nice sharp bitterness in the end. Medium to full body, velvety texture and lively carbonation. Nice experiment from Allagash, but not all that successful. The sweetness and spice were almost too much and were thankfully muted by the bite in the finish.

750ml corked bottle which has been sitting in my closet for the better part of a year. Murky orange-gold colored with a foamy head. Sweet herb and malt aroma, a little sugary. The mouthfeel is a little too mellow and free of effervescence for me, but perhaps that is due to excessive aging. Sweet and malty with some pleasant yeast tones. Some earthy notes from the herbs and Rye. Multi-faceted, but hardly exceptional.

Fresh bottle at Sunset Grill, probably a month after release if even that. Lovely looking beer, as usual from Allagash, with a very brilliant bronze-golden hue, minimal haze and a large, well-retained white head. The nose smells gingery, so I suppose yarrow must have some similarity in its aromatic profile. Spicy phenols are also noted and appreciated, with a hint of citrus (orange and lemon) that is perhaps derived from the hops. Alcohol is not noted, probably well covered up by the deep maltiness (honey dough and sweet vanilla). All in all, its not terribly cohesive yet, but is nonetheless interesting to me. Unfortunately, the flavor was absolutely dominated by yarrow, giving a very spicy, challenging ginger flavor that persisted and stuck to the palate, overdrying the finish, while mingling with the slightly underattenuated pils malt (age will dry it out properly, no doubt) in the middle to produce a candy-sweet, near cloying flavor that seems to have little more than some peppery rye malt and black pepper phenol complexity. Probably a great beer underneath all of the yarrow-derived gingeriness, but I could barely choke this stuff down as is. Big, chewy, candy-sweet body is not mitigated by the carbonation.

2007 bottle aged one year. Certainly it has mellowed out and is much less yarrow-gingery than when fresh. Quite nice, but perhaps not as much underlying complexity as I had expected. Almost a pineapple-coconut juiciness right after opening, transitioning in to a more dry, honey dough malt sweetness and finishing with a mixture of light vegetal notes and house yeast mustiness. Still no sign of alcohol, while a light dusting of white pepper phenols is quite pleasant throughout. Enjoyable to me, but the light vegetal nature could have been prevented by using a lot less yarrow, which also would have made the beer more accessible while young. Great sweet/dry balance at this point though.

Cloudy golden-orange colour. The aroma is herbal, spicy (mint, chamomile, cinnamon) and toasty with breadcrusty malts and rye. Huge herbal character - must be the yarrow - with lots of chewy rye, full maltiness. Big and rounded with a peppery finish. Very unique, well-balanced brew with accents of both Belgium and gruit. Impressive effort, muddled only by a slighlty overt yeastiness.

750 mL bottle shared by TheBeerGod at the 2008 Richmond Summer Gathering in Williamsburg. Thanks Mike! Amber color with a quickly disappearing medium-sized head. Big earthy and herby aroma. Notes of caramel, citrus, cereal, bubblegum and alcohol. Taste is very herbal... lots of woodiness and spice. Medium body with some thin spots.

Bottled. An unclear amber beer with a thin beige head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of fruit - especially peaches. The falvor is sweet mlaty with fruity notes of peaches, citrysy notes of hops as well as light notes of alcohol, leading to a dry bitter finish.
