First brewed back in 2004, Curieux was our initial foray into barrel aging. To make Curieux, we take our Tripel and let it age in bourbon barrels for six-to-eight weeks. Once that time is up, we take the beer out of our cold cellars and blend it back with a portion of fresh Tripel. The resulting rich, golden ale features smooth notes of coconut, vanilla, and a hint of bourbon.

From 75 cl bottle shared at home. Cloudy brownish gold with a thick white head. Spicy and fruity nose. Some conventional tripel notes - cardamon and orange peel - but with a soft oak overlay. Very nice

Big thanks to GT2. Smells very boozy. Almost too much - it overpowers a lot of the merits this beer has. Actually preferred the Alllagash triple. Pours pretty clear blond, durable head with lacing. There’s a good hoppy presence behind the alcohol here. Some banana as well. The price tag I saw in an American store recently seemed overpriced for this though.

Taste is sweet malty, yeast, sweet caramel, oaky, coconut, bourbon, lemon, orangepeel. Medium body, soft carbonation. Well balaned and wonderful, the bourbon barrels play very well with original beer. 220212

Persimmon nose with green apple underneath, oddly tart for a tripel. Hazy amber, medium lacy head. Persimmon and peach flavor. Bourbon is prominent but not overbearing. Weighty and full bodied, but not viscous. Finishes oaky. This is a very multi-dimensional beer. There are sour, sweet, bitter, boozy, light, and heavy aspects to this beer. How Allagash manages to get them together all in one beer without creating a mess is a stroke of genius. It even has made me rethink my dislike of bourbon barrel aging. In imperial stouts it becomes a chore, in a tart well made tripel it is an elegant delight. Game changer.
