Bottle looks simple but good. Beer in the glass very dark, almost black. Dry-malty aroma, quite fruity like plums. Starts very malty-woody with notes of strong coffee and bitter chocolate. Finish with notes of liquorice, woody-dry, very complex. A bit too unbalanced for me, but still good.

Bottle. Pours a black color with ruby hints and a small tan head. Has a slightly roasted malty chocolate and dark fruit aroma. Warming roasted malty chocolate and dark fruit flavor with light woody hints. Has a sweetish malty caramel and chocolate finish with hints of dark fruits and weak hoppy hints.

I finally got a chance to try this one. Pours a thick viscous dark brown with a stingy tan head that pokes out in the beginning but barely leaves a ring around the top. Smells like a fruity dark roasty stout. I pick up dark fruits I’m thinking chocolate covered cherries maybe some plums drizzled in dark caramel and burnt sugar, dipped in espresso with a touch of vodka. The taste is thick and sweet, but not overly cloying. There is a hint of hops left in this, and the alcohol that remains counteracts the sweetness of this affair. I guess now that I read the label and see that this is brewed with molasses that is where I am getting the dark sugars from. Starts off sweet with dark sugar add a bit of dark fruit segue into some light chocolate and roasted grains with a touch of alcohol. Long lingering dark roasted, chocolate sugary sweetness in the finish. I pick up something that may be licorice in the finish, but other than that I can’t find it in here. Thick sweet body, light carbonation, syrupy thick creamy mouthfeel. I like my stouts sweet and complex and this one certainly delivers. I can see this one getting a bit cloying with age as the alcohol and hops mellow, but right now I think this one is fantastic! It reminds me of a cross between Expedition and The Abyss. I just wish I could get some more :(

12oz bottle. Finally got around to rating this after several samples. Should be mentioned, this bottle has 14 months of age on it. Pours a oily, thick, opaque black with a thin, creamy, lacing tan head. Nose is almost that of burnt, brulee’d sugar, coffee liqueur, black strap molasses, darkly toasted bread, burnt barley, rum soaked cherries, vanilla, booze, a little bit of sherry coming into the nose. Flavors of raw black licorice, vanilla beans, caramel sugar, cherry, stale coffee, coconut rum. Full bodied, cloyingly sweet. Still a booze bomb. Cross your fingers and pray for this one if you have a case left like I do.

A deep dark reddish brown ale with a thin dark brown head. In aroma, A beautiful plums, soy sauce, treacle aroma, warming alcohol, molasses, wow! In mouth, a sweet maple over dark fruits, wild south american cana molasses, smooth hops, toasted malts....double wow! On tap at Brewvival, Feb. 26 2011.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color ale with a medium dark brown foamy head with good retention and good lacing. Aroma of sweet malt notes with some light liquorice. Taste is also quite sweet though not overwhelming so with some roasted malt with light liquorice notes. Body is full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Not as complex as I would have expected from this brewer but not as bad either based on the most recent ratings.

Big licorice flavor, some molasses, with more chocolate and light roast. Bottle at Chriso’ Blue Mountains of Virginia tasting. Very very dark brown with a thin beige head. Rather a lovely strong liquorice beer with day malt. Doesn’t drink it’s strength. Very impressive and very likeable.

Dark brown color. The beer shows good complexity with caramel, dark cherries and milk chocolate notes. Later on, I noticed hints of grappa, interesting! Full bodied, moderately sweet. Decent stuff that would go excellent with coffee cake.
