12 oz. bottle, split with Matts_Property, pours jet black with a small tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate, rich roasted malts, burnt dark fruits and caramelized sugar. Flavour reveals the dark chocolate upfront, with some dark fruits and caramel in back, finishing quite boozy. Velvety smooth palate though lacking some depth, with the alcohol burn slightly detracting. Really good nonetheless.

Solid, if dull, twelve ounces of dark goodness. Pours well, slowly growing pitch black with a lively, clingy black head. The aroma is off-putting, though, with some black coffee and dark chocolate notes, but seriously heavy alcohol fumes ruin the party. Tastes fine, hits everything you want an Impy Stout to hit, but unconvincingly, Crisp and light at first, it quickly gains malty heft, smoky and dark, with a charcoal-laced coffee finish. But the flavors never settle, instead bobbing and weaving Ali-like across your palate. Feel is smooth; the liquor on the nose never shows up in the body. But there are too many awesome Impy Stouts out there to give much heed to the Old Heathen. (5/27/09)

Bottle at Henrik, Bergen. Pours pitch black, with a thick, creamy head. Aroma is coffee and roasted malt, with sweet notes of candi sugar. Coffee flavour, with an abundance of sweetness, as in an espresso with three full bags of brown sugar. Also notes of sweet liquorice, dark chocolate and a light touch of honey. A very light, almost unnoticeable, hop bitterness, making the finish slightly dry, but no lasting aftertaste. A good beer, but to sweet.

2010 Edition 12 oz. bottle. Motor oil color with a tiny ring of caramel around the top. Rich chocolate, dark fruits and vanilla. Medium body with a very smooth roasted chocolate flavor and a very strong coffee finish. Well worth drinking without being outstanding, maybe because the Impy stout I drank 30 minutes before this was just that much better. I would buy the Heresy from Weyerbacher before I would get this one again.
