Dark brown color, small but steady head. Licorice, caramel and cinnamon in aroma and flavor. Sweetish and spicy. Sugary, but also a hint of peach fruit is present. I can taste a touch of alcohol, but it is still very well hidden for its 10% ABV.

12.04.2017, 0,75l bottle (best before 15.02.2013) shared @ BBGTC tasting:
Small slightly fizzy-creamy mediumlasting head, clear dark amber color. Aroma is slightly dry grainy, hay, minerals, "knekk", grain, toast, grass, anise, metal tank, sawdust. Taste is slightly dry mineraly, weeds, grass, anise, minerals, grain, alcohol, bark, dark sugar, metal tank, fruit stones. Medium bitterness, slightly watery and sour-ish grassy mouthfeel. Kind of boring.

The original, dark version of this beer, with yellowish, moussy foam leaving pretty lacing on the edge of the glass and dark ruby red colour, clear. Powerful, typical Gouden Carolus aroma with lots of spices, impressions of star aniseed, mint, cherry liqueur, sherry, coughing candy, cloves and chocolate. Sweetish taste, resinous, bitterish spices, very light sourish touch, even a bit of salty ’drop’, light roasted bitterness in the end, bit astringent alcohol. Interesting, rich ale of the Scotch type, meanwhile revised to a blonde one.

2005 bottle at Kulminator. Shared with 77ships. Pretty orange-amber color with a low head. Lots of raisin, caramel, and something like smoked cheese in the nose. Lightly oxidated. Tangy orange flavor, prune, raisin, treacle, again something like smoke cheese or even sausage., root beer. Oxidized but still in pretty nice shape.

2005 Vintage 75 cl. bottle @ Kulminator shared with KyotoLefty. Pours a dark wood brown, almost mahogany with a surprisingly solid tanned head. Nose is sweet prunes, dark brown sugar, oxidation in good sherry quality. Taste is sweet prunes, jam, dark fruits jam, raisin, dark honey & overripe banana, spices, sweet herbs, good oxidation. Body is a bit thinned out but still holding up. Has aged very nicely as Gouden Carolus beers tend to unlike most beers despite what some might claim. A very nice brew, thx! for the introduction & split.

Bottle courtesy of tarheels86, thank you sir. Dark brown color, small head, little lacing. Aroma of in foil, and the candied coating used on chocolate easter eggs. Taste is chocolate candy and Worcestershire sauce, with a metallic edge. If you have a bottle of this, I would lay it down for a couple of years, in the hope that it might improve!

Bottle from matt7215. Thanks man. Pours a very dark red tinged amber with a two finger light tan head. Aroma suggests spiced cola. Full bodied with very creamy carbonation. Flavor is plummy chocolate. Decent amount of bitter. Quite spicey in a non-biting way. It’s really tasty.
