Belgian-Style Brown Ale Brewed with Yams, Molasses, Maple Syrup and Spices
Brewed with 17 lbs. of yams per barrel (in other words, a lot of yams!), this autumn seasonal is a different take on the “pumpkin” beer style. Brewed with cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, vanilla, molasses, and maple syrup. Rather than ferment the beer with our traditional Belgian yeast strain, this version was 100% fermented with brettanomyces, adding a dry, earthy quality to the traditionally bold and spicy beer.

Aroma is somewhat spicy and sweet with maple syrup(!). Also some root beer tones. Flavour is spicy with syrupy tones, some caramel and herbal tones. Also some toffee candy. I’ve waited for a long to tick this one – and after all that this was a disappointment. Too spicy, like an imperial pumpkin ale.

Pours dark reddish orange with a smooth white head. Aroma of spices, sweet caramel, toffee, syrup, ripe fruits and berries. Taste is sweet, sticky and stuffy with loads of caramel, syrup, ripe fruits, berries and toffee. Finish is stuffy, sticky and sweet with loads of syrup, ripe fruits and caramel notes. Way too sweet for my taste.

750 ml bottle. Pours a reddish mahogany with light head and lots of carbonation. Aromas of baconish resin, spice, and something like yam fries. Tastes similar. Typical pumpkin type beer. Pass.

Fra flaske på Alehouse, Riga 8 Okt 13 i selskap med hyggelige kollegaer fra jobben. Dyp amber. Lavt lagskum. Litt uklar. Søt fruktaroma. Smaken er også søt frukt. Litt kjedelig. Hadde forventet mer.

Bottle. Murky brown liquid with small to medium light brown head. Aroma of raw sugar, spices, caramel, toffee, bread, marmalade and bread. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter with notes of bread, raw sugar, syrup and spices. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Nice but a bit too spiced.

Znakomite jesienne piwo, pite akurat w chlodny wieczor zimy. Srednia piana ale sliczny czerwonawo pomaranczowy kolor, na koniec metne. Slodkosc i slodycz byla tu gora ale to bardzo przyjemne doznania w tym przypadku. Nie kazde amerykanskie piwo musi pachniec i smakowac cytrusowym aromatycznym chmielem. Tu go bylo niewiele, a praktycznie niewyczuwalny, i dobrze bo dominowal syrop klonowy, dzem brzoskwiniowy, nieco powidel sliwkowych. A wszystko to rozgrzewalo w zimny wieczor za sprawa sporej dawki alkoholu. Bardzo fajne wrazenia. Finisz slodki dlugi i alkoholowy i bardzo rozgrzewajacy. Nieco dyni tez bylo w smaku, a jakze. Gorazo polecam nie tylko na chlodne wieczory jesienne, ale zwlaszcza zimowe.

Big bottle. Deep, lovely amber-red with a tall head that disappears quickly. Very big spice nose, yams (seems like pumpkins), cinnamon, Belgian yeast. Nose spicy fall nose. Sweet flavor, maple syrup, cinnamon, fruity tang, oranges. Very autumny. Quite sweet but not over-the-top at all. Quite nice, really.

Bottle at home. Pours a dark ruby/brown, bunt toffee and light maple on nose, tastes sweet, burnt toffee, caramel, maple, hint of aniseed.
