The jewel in our crown was celebrated, many years in advance, by the prescient Jem Casey, Poet of the Pick and Bard of Booterstown, when he remarked that when “…no rashers grease your pan / A pint of plain is yer only man.” We agree and we’re not alone. Our Plain Porter – porter is a lighter version of stout – is a double gold medal winner. Its subtly aromatic, a silky, round mouthful with a touch of bitterness kicking in at the finish.

Draught at the brewpub. Clear, red/brown colored. AROMA- malty and bready, roasted malts. FLAVOR- neutral with dry finish, roasted malts, slightly watery. Light bodied.

Keg tap at the Porterhouse, Covent Garden. Dark brown, translucent, with a Guinnessy beige head. Roasted coffee, hazelnut, malt and nougat candy on the aroma. Bittersweet nutty taste with a strong hoppy bitter finish which stops just short of too much astringency. Espresso and black cherry in the aftertaste. Smooth palate. Too cold, but if you let it warm up a bit it allows the flavours to shine through. A decent keg porter.

330ml bottle. Clear, darkest brown colour with ruby red glimmer and late awakening, average, thick, creamy, fairly lasting, superabundantly lacing, beige head. Roasty, dark malty aroma, hints of roasted grain, coffee surrogate, dark bread, pumpernickel, saltwater. Taste is dry, roasty dark malty, a touch of dark chocolate, dark bread, pumpernickel, a minmally salty touch.

Bei diesem Porter wurde an der Geschmacksschraube gedreht, damit es nicht in die süßlich-malzige geht, sondern man will dem edlen Hopfen eine kleine Bühne bieten. Ein Versuch, der etwas nach hinten losging. So ist es anderen Portern gegenüber eher schmachbrüstig, der Hopfen kommt trotzdem nicht ganz raus. Man kann es wohl leicht trinken, aber ein wirklich tolles Geschmackserlebnis ist es nicht.

Bottle at Stuu’s. Pours clear dark amber with a thin beige head. Aromas of dark fruit. Taste is light chocolate. Dry finish. Ok.
