Tasted a few years ago outside the brewery’s pub. Clear orangey blonde beer with very thick, Duvel-like, frothy head leaving firm lacing. Fruity nose with bready malts, spiciness, ’jenever’, grass, vanilla, peaches and pineapple; fruity and crisp taste, very agreeable, smooth maltiness adorned with spicy and yeasty notes here and there, herbal finish with some warming, not disturbing alcohol, drying. A very well-balanced beer, at least fresh from tap at the brewery. Duvel-inspired, it seems; in any case the best of Gruut’s beers so far, at least to my opinion.

Helder geel bier met schuim. Smaak is droog en licht zoet met sporen van ananas en caramel Apart, maar goed bier, smaak blijft lang hangen.

0,33L bottle, BB 23.08.15. Pours clear golden with huge white head. The head stays. Aroma is very sweet, sour notes, fruits, malt, alcohol and metallic notes. Taste is very sweet, fruits, malt, yeast, and some spicy notes. Finish has a touch of bitterness and hints of alcohol. Alcohol is rather well hidden. Carbonation is fizzy. Body feels rather light, but not watery. Overall: too much carbonation and too sweet for my taste.

16th May 2014, a Westvleteren chalice was chosen to pour the 33cl bottle into. BBD 17th Nov 2014, so 8.5% ABV. Exceedingly lively, only a third of the bottle got into the chalice, a huge white head prevented anymore beer getting in without spillage. The second pour saw the clear golden body grow in size, the snowy white head still very large. The third pour added to both the beer level and the head, the sediment staying in the base of the bottle, so still a clear beer! The nose is subdued by the coolness, some yeastiness and herbal/floral notes appear along with bread and biscuity malts as it warmed in the chalice. It tastes similar to what the smell eventually expresses: slightly malty with a yeasty base with a herbal/fruity feel. The finish is bittering and mildly citrus. I thought about putting this into a Duvel glass, glad I didn’t: this is a different sort of beer to a Duvel.
