What does years of hardcore experimentation look like? Witness this imperial version of our Black Butte Porter. Three types of chocolate malt. Three varieties of northwest hops. Cocoa nibs from the Dominican Republic. Locally roasted Ethiopian coffee. Painstakingly aged in bourbon barrels. Joyous abandon in a bottle. After 21 years we recognize the safe path, we just refuse to take it.

The coffee, chocolate and other sweet flavors come through quite well (some licorice). Pours a nice, thick black with a medium-sized head. High alcohol content is quite apparent. This one is a winner/keeper!

22oz XXI bottle picked up from Jim’s Homebrew shop in Spokane over Christmas
Appearance: Pours a thick black with a nice frothy tan head, some lacing left in the glass
Aroma: Roasted malts and tons of chocolate, coffee, vanilla with some hints of alcohol
Taste: Silky mouthfeel. The taste is just like the aroma, roasted malts, chocolate, coffee.
This is a great porter. The aroma has some hot alcohols, but the none in the taste. Very smooth and easy drinkability.

bottle at Fort Wayne tasting - Pours dark brown to black with a lasting tan head. It smells of cocoa, roast malt, and some alcohol. The flavor is big and bold with tons of roast malt and chocolate flavors along with some coffee. Ample hops keeps the heavy malt from getting too carried away. Excellent beer.

Bottle @ J.C.G US Tasting Pt.2. Pours pitch black with a small creamy brown head and lacings. Nose is heavy roasted and nearly burnt, cold coffee and chocolate. Flavor also has hints of vanilla and oak. Smooth and full bodied. A sweet experience but it works fine. Light warmth.

xx bottle, thanks odeed! Pours pitch black with a medium dark tan head. Aroma is rich black patent and roasted barley. Some oak and bourbon as well. Rich roasted coffee and barley notes with some sweet cream and vanilla ending with a light bourbon burn. Very nice.

Opaque black pour with an average-sized dark tan head that dissipates quickly. Pleasant aroma of Bourbon and chocolate. Great flavor! Not too much Bourbon as many of these Barrel aged beers can be. Smooth and creamy with lots of chocolate and coffee notes. The sweetness is balanced perfectly by the roast malts.

22 oz bottle. Smells and tastes spicy. I’m a big fan of Deschutes’ Black Butte Porter, but my already high expectations for this beer were exceeded after just two drinks. If Black Butte Porter is Bruce Banner, XXI is the Incredible Hulk, beefing up an already great beer to unparalleled heights.
