What does years of hardcore experimentation look like? Witness this imperial version of our Black Butte Porter. Three types of chocolate malt. Three varieties of northwest hops. Cocoa nibs from the Dominican Republic. Locally roasted Ethiopian coffee. Painstakingly aged in bourbon barrels. Joyous abandon in a bottle. After 21 years we recognize the safe path, we just refuse to take it.

Thanks to WeeHeavySD for this one - pours thinner than I expected, but sheβs got a nice black/dark ruby color, and a dark tan lace - nose of roasted and chocolate malts, cocoa, espresso, and moderate hints of bourbon and alcohol heat - slick mouthfeel, creamy body, but the body is only around medium, which is on the light side for its strength - semi-astringent coffee bitterness, medium sweet chocolate, mild bourbon notes - some bittersweet dark chocolate on the end, and a hint of oaky tartness - itβs nice to have the barrel/bourbon elements subdued and well-integrated, but I would hardly call this outstanding - I need to stop seeking out bourbon-aged beers - I really do.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a good size light brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of bourbon and black chocolate is dominant with some light roasted malt notes also discernable. Taste is also a nice mix between some well balance bourbon with notes of black chocolate. Hops are well hidden as well as alcohol. Full body with great carbonation. Interesting and well done but I was expecting to be blown away as I had been with the Abyss so I was somewhat disappointed by that one.

Draft @ Bond Street Brewpub, Bend OR. Pours a black color with a small tan head. Malty chocolate, coffe, dark fruit and vanilla aroma with some hints of licorice. Roasted malty chocolate and coffee flavor with some hints of licorice and some oaky hints. Has a long warming roasted malty chocolate finish with some hoppy bitter hints and hints of oak in the aftertaste.

Bottle LCRBM08. Literally black, no head to speak of. Leather, dried fruits and sweet caramel in the nose. Full bitter-sweet flavour, full bodied. Caramel, coffee and leather in the lingering bitter finish. Very well made brew........

Bottle, 11% at LCRBM08. Vinous aroma, sweet yeast. Black colour, very small brown head. Good flavour, bready, roasted, vanilla, vinous. Very good combination. The alcohol is a bit rough, but all in all very nice.

Head gone in less than 1 second, over ink-black beer. Ink, c-hops at large, meat-gravy smell, soy sauce. Nearly bitter hops overlay, but still, the sweet-alcoholic character dominates. Black fruits in the finish, some cardemoms and pepper. Very thick, syrupy and viscous. Ah. This one is difficult, as it starts nearly lame, but gradually complexity builds up, layered as an onion. This is actually quite good and complex.

Draught at the Freakin’ Frog, Las Vegas
Black color, with generous brown creamy head. Strange brew, with flavors of coffee, medicines, liquorice, but all together rather interesting. The body is quite strong and with some sweetness; the final quite balanced and without the ashtray feeling of many Imperial Stouts. Pleasant.

(Bottle, Stockholm Beer Festival, 20 Sep 2008) Black colour with brief, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of chocolate, coffee and liquorice. Malty, roasted taste with dark chocolate, cocoa, black coffee and dark rye bread. Full body, smooth mouthfeel. Fairly bitter with balanced sweetness. Stunning balance with alcohol very well hidden. Lovely beer!
