Grodziskie or Grätzer is a Sour Smoked Wheat Ale that was brewed in the 1900s in East Prussia and dates back to as early as the 15th century. It was named after the Polish town of Grodzisk Wielkopolski or Grätz in German. Our historic version is brewed according to the German Purity Law with air-dried barley malt and beech smoked wheat malt and hopped with Perle and Saaz. A sour mash is created using the old and forgotten technique called “Digerieren.” Finally a three month aging and maturation process creates a complex sour, smoky and heavily hopped wheat ale.

Half liter bottle from Beer Run. Pours a clear amber color with a medium sized fizzy off-white head. Decent head retention. Aroma of wheat, caramel, faint smoke.. The taste is smoke, pale wheat malts, stone fruits, more smoke in the finish along with some raisin and herbal hops. Lightly tart. Medium bodied. Decent.

Pours an orangish yellow color. Fairly hazy. Slightly off-white head. Kinda rocky. Fades pretty quickly. Not a very pretty beer, but it’s not an important consideration to me. The aroma is smoke with some spicy, mineral-ish hops. There’s a touch of sourness and a kinda stale malt flavor. Very mild. Taste is a bit better. It’s mildly tart with some nice background wheat and malt sweetness. Low level of bitterness. Good mix of wheat and hop spiciness with yeast or, maybe, actual spicing. Sort of a grassy, wheaty finish. Some funky, earthy flavors are also in the mix. Mild woody smoke. A little too much sweetness for my palate or I’d go higher with my score. Mouthfeel is a bit full. I’d prefer the beer to be a touch crisper, but the smoke might make that kinda odd. Relatively low carbonation. This was a fun beer to try, but it’s just a bit mild, and the malt sweetness doesn’t quite seem right. I also wonder if a fresher bottle would have a little more hop kick to it, as the label alludes to hops as a highlight and they don’t really come across with much strength. Still, I’m always happy to try lesser known and historical styles.

500 ml bottle shared by beastiefan2k. The pour is lightly hazed gold yellow, with a small white head. The aroma is soft wheat, a touch of citrus lemon, decent amount of herbal, and grass and straw in the back. The wheat and the herbal blend together giving it an almost medicinal nose. The taste is the soft wheat, along with the herbal medicinal flavors, lightly lemon citrus, and maybe a little bit of earth in the back. I really do not perceive any smoke here, though the earthiness is a dirty earth. The palate is medium bodied, soft low carbonation. This is a weird beer, interesting though. Thanks for sharing Eugene.

Pour is a hazy orange with almost no head at all. Aroma is hard to detect. Some hefe banana and estery yeast but that is faint and there is not much else. Flavor is more pronounced. Some sour notes to start then comes a almost juniper berry. A ever so slight smoke note hits the tounge after the swallow. It’s different I’ll give it that.

Pours deep cloudy gold into a stein. Bright white head with medium retention recedes to skim surface leaving scant sheets. Sweet tropical fruit aromas. Medium bodied and dry with earthy caramel and sour wheat front to back. Lasting slightly bitter finish. No sign of smoke.
