Grodziskie or Grätzer is a Sour Smoked Wheat Ale that was brewed in the 1900s in East Prussia and dates back to as early as the 15th century. It was named after the Polish town of Grodzisk Wielkopolski or Grätz in German. Our historic version is brewed according to the German Purity Law with air-dried barley malt and beech smoked wheat malt and hopped with Perle and Saaz. A sour mash is created using the old and forgotten technique called “Digerieren.” Finally a three month aging and maturation process creates a complex sour, smoky and heavily hopped wheat ale.

Bottle( kindly delivered by jfb!): Deep golden, cloudy , slowly collapsing loose white head with a little lace, sweetish wheaty-fruity (apricots) nose with very faint traces of smoked malt; dryish sourish-sweetish flavour, light bodied; lingering hoppy and sourish finish. Not too special, tastes a bit like an average German Hefeweizen…

Bottle shared at a sour tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Cloudy yellow. Pretty smoky aroma, somewhat meaty, with some fruitiness and an oxidation note. Flavor has light sweetness, quite a bit of smokiness, a bit of fruitiness, faint sourness, and a finish with light hoppy bitterness. Light to medium-bodied.

Aroma is moderately estery with notes of red apple cider, pear and banana. There are light acid and smoke notes, but the esters seem to dominate the aroma. Light malt character with hints of phenolics. Pours a cloudy, dull gold with some light brown highlights. Medium sized white head that recedes fairly quickly. Flavor starts with some maltiness with notes of wheat and lightly toasted bread. Light acidity, nowhere near as acidic as Berliner Weiss. The smoke hits in the finish and is fairly light but definitely noticeable. Moderate ester notes that trend more towards banana. Light wheat note in finish as well. Low noble hop flavor in late palate with low bitterness. Mouthfeel is light bodied and a bit watery, carbonation is medium high. No astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall an OK beer, but I wonder how representative of the style this beer is. The esters seem too strong and the smoke too light based on the little reading I have done. Also it could use more hop character.

Bottle from Charleston Beer Exchange. It pours clear gold with a medium white head. The nose is wheat, light toast, hay, cracker, smoke, cream cheese and ham. The taste is wheat, toast, hay, light sourness, hint of smoke, peach, apricot, pithy citrus and natural yogurt with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Smooth, well-balanced and pretty tasty.

50 cl. bottle sampled @ RBESG 2013. Thx! to jfb. Hazy golden with a creamy white head. Nose is paint, new wood, light smoke, touch acetone, touch paint thinner but not overly brutal, interesting. Taste is sour grains, some leather, sweet spices, mellow sourness, wheat, mellow smoke, touch bread, lightly fruity,… Easy to drink, lightly grainy body. Very easy to drink, interesting, quite lovely. Nice stuff.
