Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens (ed: Weihenstephan denies this), “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness.

It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways.

“1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Bottle(keep on learnin’, jfb!): Golden, hazy , small and slowly diminishing white head, malic acid and cellary flavours in the fruity-sourish nose;mild dryish sourish flavour with a delicate residual sweetness, light to medium bodied and pretty soft; fruity-apply finish covering slight traces of cider. Good…

Hazy pale golden colour, firm white head. Funky aroma, wort, malts, herbal, horse blanket and apple juice. Light sour flavour, citrus, fanta. Lots of carbo. Finish citrus and horse blanket. Interesting beer.

Sampled @ RBESG 13 Grand Tasting. Hazy yellow colour with a lacing white head. There’s hardly any smell at all. Tastes slightly sour, fresh and quite boring. Thin body, medium carbo.

50 cl. bottle sampled @ RBESG 2013. Thx! to jfb. Hazy golden, very citrus, bright lemon looking, white head only on the sides. Nose is lactic, cereal, citrus, fruits, sour lemon,… Taste is sour lactic lemon, grains, sour grains, lemon peel, lemon candy, light funk. Touch higher carb. grainy. Interesting, enjoyable & could certainly be quite sessionable.

Bottled @ RBESG 2013 Grand Tasting. Cloudy yellow color, short head. Aroma of soft citrus, hay, hint of horseblanket. Bit sweet, slight acidic, soft sourness. Bit thin, bit too much carbonation. Too dry, bit sweaty, hint of apple cider. It has quite some potential, but it just not really gets there. Could have more funk and more sourness.

Bottle @ RBESG grand tasting. Hazy pale yellow color, small white head. Not a lot of aroma other than a light fruityness. Taste is dry, slightly sour fruits and green apple. Not bad but I’ve had better beers from this style.
