Grut bier has roots in many cultures and each culture had it’s own “special ingredients": Egyptians, Native Americans, Arabian Tribes, Gaulles, Germanic Tribes and the Vikings.
This interpretation of a traditional Grut Bier is spiced with Lorbeer (Bay Leaves), Ingwer (Ginger), Kummel (Caraway), Anis (Anise), Rosemarin (Rosemarie) & Enzian (Gentian). It is brewed with water, wheat & barley malt, "pollinated wild hops" and fermented using top fermenting yeast.

Pours a hazy yellow with light soapy head. Huge nose of potpourri. Tastes heavily of ginger, lemon, bay leaves, eucalyptus, earth, and anise. Interesting different brew for a Tuesday night

500 ml bottle into pint glass, no bottle dating. Pours hazy golden straw color with a small 1 finger foamy white head with decent retention, that reduces to nearly nothing. Minimal lacing clinging to the glass. Aromas of lemon, apple, wheat, pepper, clove, herbal, floral, earth, anise, and steak sauce; seriously, steak sauce. Some very interesting aromas with good strength and decent balance. Taste of lemon, pear, apple, wheat, rosemary, basil, ginger, pepper, clove, anise, and herbal spiciness. Very slight tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of light fruit, spices, herbs, wheat, and pepper on the finish for a very short bit. Nice flavor balance and complexity; quite dry on the finish. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; with a very crisp and clean mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with no warming present on the finish at all as expected. Extremely easy to drink. Overall this is a nice Gruit style ale. The aromas were certainly interesting; but the taste was nicely balanced and very smooth. This was quite enjoyable.

bottle - Pours yellow with a minimal head. It’s a very bubbly looking brew with chunky suspended yeast. The aroma is of ginger, other herbals, and some citrus and particularly lemon notes. The flavor is sweet with ginger presence. It’s light and watery. The finish is on the dry side. It’s different. It’s unusual. It smells pretty good. Other than that, to me it’s a watery, quite lacking brew. Overrated.

Bottle @ Dan’s. Cloudy, yellow orange appearance with a white head. Big spicy, ginger, organic, wheat malty aroma. Ginger, very spicy, citrusy, organic leafy, lemon, sweet malty flavor. Fun to try but nothing special.

Bottle. Gentian aroma tends to dominate but ginger. bay leaf and rosemary apparent. Hazy pale yellow color with moderate head and moderate effervescence. Light malt flavor with spices much more subdued (thankfully as I’m not a huge gentian fan). Interesting - would have made life more tolerable despite being covered in shit.

/11/12/10/11/11

500 mL bottle. Pours golden with a haze, lots of medium chunks, and a rapidly-vanishing white head. Aroma is dominated by ginger. Ginger is the largest component of the flavor as well, with greener herbal flavors, perhaps the rosemary, and wheat. Bit of a tart flavor. Pretty tasty, I think.

This beer is a hazy yellowish color with noticeable sediment and a medium white head that recedes steadily. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Spiced aroma with notes of ginger primarily, along with fruit. Light to medium body with flavors of sweet spices, malt and yeast. Potpourri finish with a lingering herbal aftertaste. Different for sure, but wears you down after a couple sips.

Pours cloudy yellow with a thin white head. Sweet, lemony herbal aroma. Flavor that follows the aroma with a bit of tartness. Thin. Very nice Gruit. This could also pass for a Witbier.

Pours hazy golden color with white head. Aromas of licorice and pepper with some other spices. Tastes like flowers and perfume. Strange. Light to medium body with lively carbonation. Interesting to try, but I wouldn’t seek it out again.
