Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout (Smokestack Series - formerly known as Imperial Stout)
Over-the-top but surprisingly approachable, this twist on the classic style starts with several types of malted barley, rye, oats and wheat. Robust flavors of vanilla, espresso, whiskey, chocolate and roasted grain are balanced by hints of date and plum, with just enough hops to round it all out. Roughly one-third of the final blend is freshly brewed beer; the rest is aged for up to a year (or more!) in both first and second use whiskey casks.

Bottle at home. Three year old. Pours a black colour with a small light beige head. Aroma with lots of chocolate truffles, coffee beans, whisky, wood and some smoke. The flavour follows up and mirrors the aroma. Rich and silky mouth feel, full-bodied and a light bitterness. A well-balanced IS with lots of chocolate.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 8/18/2017. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a small dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, whiskey, toasted oak, molasses, coconut, dark bread, raisin, plum, fig, licorice, light smoke/pepper, herbal, and yeast/roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, whiskey barrels, and light-moderate fruity yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, whiskey, toasted oak, molasses, coconut, and dark bread; with lighter notes of smoke, raisin, plum, fig, licorice, pepper, herbal, and roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Light herbal hop/roast bitterness and yeast/whiskey/oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, whiskey, toasted oak, molasses, coconut, dark bread, light smoke/dark fruits, and roast/toast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, whiskey barrels, and light fruity yeast flavors; with a great roasted bitter/sweet balance, and no cloying/acrid flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full body; with a very smooth, creamy, silky, velvety, and rich mouthfeel that is awesome. Slightly chalky, tannic, and drying. Alcohol is very well hidden; a very mild warmth, with zero barrel booziness lingering after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding barrel aged imperial stout! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, whiskey barrels, and light fruity yeast flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the big ABV. Very rich with perfectly integrated whiskey barrels and great malt complexity. Nice complementing yeast notes that aren't overwhelming. Very smooth/silky mouthfeel from the barrel aging. A highly enjoyable offering.

Draft at BitterCreek. I thought I had hit the highlights, but then this..... F’ing WOW! Inky black , small silky head. Blah, blah, blah. Aroma is a malted chocolate bar, roasty, sweet. Taste gets better, chocolate, sweet roast grains. And smooth....Velvet, dayglo bullfighter on velvet. Hits every mark. I’m melting into my bar stool. Incredible.

Corked bottle from Steamworks Liquor Store, Vancouver; vintage 2014, batch I14297-2, bb 10-2016, 2 years old
Pitch black color, brownish creamy head. Aroma of dark malts, chocolate and coffee, in harmony. As I get rid of some carbonation and it gets warmer, the body gets stronger; very good dark chocolate flavor, with roasted nuts and a roasted malt component that doesn’t overwhelm the others.
Excellent.

Tap at R+B. Thick brown-black body. Very sweet, roasty, almost has leathery bourbon tones. Chewy sweet caramel notes. Massive beige head. This really seems barrel aged. Pretty good.
