Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout (Smokestack Series - formerly known as Imperial Stout)

Over-the-top but surprisingly approachable, this twist on the classic style starts with several types of malted barley, rye, oats and wheat. Robust flavors of vanilla, espresso, whiskey, chocolate and roasted grain are balanced by hints of date and plum, with just enough hops to round it all out. Roughly one-third of the final blend is freshly brewed beer; the rest is aged for up to a year (or more!) in both first and second use whiskey casks.

355ml bottle from Beer Republic. Pours dark brown, almost black with a bubbly white head. Aroma of roasty malts, whisky, vanilla, oak, wood, toffee, syrup and chocolate. Taste is sweetish, syrupy and roasty with some whisky, oak, wood, vanilla, toffee and chocolate. Finish is woody, oaky and roasty with some whisky, vanilla, coffee, chocolate and cocoa notes. Okay, quite balanced.

Savor: pours black with beige head. Aroma is vanilla and whiksy. Some pepper and bitterness. Creamy. obviously loads of coffee and vanilla in the taste as well. Sweetish but still sharp. Barrels do not overpower.

Deep, almost perfectly pitch black coloured body with an oily glow on top along with a thinnish, single centimetre tall rich brown head. Aroma of pure whiskey, bourbon, peat, grain, alcohol, vanilla, honey, burnt sugars and a dose of licorice/anise as well - quite pungent in the nose, in a generally good way. Full-bodied; Rich licorice and anise flavour at first with a ton of pungent caramelised sugar flavours along with honey, vanilla, flowers, peat, malt, whiskey, bourbon, rum and a fairly sizeable amount of lactose. Aftertaste shows a very robust and complex flavour of alcohol and sugars with a lot of derivatives coming right behind with a good dose of anise and licorice breaking that mold a bit. Overall, a very nice, incredibly pungent and a good flavoured beer with a great kick still and a complex and well balanced and nuanced beer throughout - great to sample, and well worth trying if you can find this! I'm guessing the age helped this one quite a bit, and if I drank this 'fresh', I'd probably have a good deal lower score, just due to the punch it would pack. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Fairfax, Virginia on 17-February-2016 for US$2,99 sampled at home, just a bit two years later on 03-March-2018. Draft at Southern Grist - Nations. Pours a deep brown with a half-a-finger of beige head that leaves a ring. Chocolate nose with some vanilla oak aromas. Bourbon, chocolate, sixlet’s and creamy vanilla. Boozy, warming finish with a lingering cola-like texture.

12 oz bottle. Pours black with a light tan head. Sweet molasses/brown sugar aroma, dark fruit, hinting at bourbon, with alcohol. Flavor also strong in the molasses, with bourbon, cocoa, dark fruit. A bit simplistic, but solid.

26.12.2017, 0,75l bottle (2013 vintage, best before 11.2015) @ home:
Nice light brown slightly bubbly-creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly rich and dry roasted, dark malts, mild bourbon, oak, licorice, chocolate, leather, grass, bark, caramel, hay, coffee. Taste is slightly dry mineraly, weeds, mild bourbon, dark malts, oak, minerals, grass, chocolate, licorice, metal tank, toast, sour coffee. Medium bitterness, slightly dry sour-ish mineraly mouthfeel. Nice enough, probably a bit over the top.

Sampled from the tap at Happy Gnome. Pours black with a light brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of vanilla supported by whiskey, dark grains, roasted malts and a touch of coffee. Flavor has sweet dark grains and vanilla with whiskey, roasted malts and a hint of coffee backing.

bottle - Black pour with a small tan head. The aroma is of whiskey, roast malt, and cocoa. The flavor is sweet with chocolate, roast malt, assertive whiskey notes, and vanilla. The alcohol is pretty well buried in this full flavored beer. Superb brew.

Sampling a 12 oz bottle from a four pack bought in Ft. Worth at a Total Wine. Another brew from Boulevard, good news usually. The label says 11.8% ABV. Lifted into my favorite tulip glass for stouts the body is dark, just short of total black. The pour leaves a thin, light tan head. Taking a smell I detect vanilla, chocolate, a caramel sweetness. A drink now, oh my. Truly fine. The caramel again, malt, semi-sweet chocolate, some alcohol booziness. A glimmer of bitterness. Bourbon hanging there in the background. Not as viscous as other imperial stouts. A departure from those stouts taste-wise, I am impressed. So Boulevard is becoming my favorite brewery, adventurous and rewarding. It's been a good day, tater.
