Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout (Smokestack Series - formerly known as Imperial Stout)
Over-the-top but surprisingly approachable, this twist on the classic style starts with several types of malted barley, rye, oats and wheat. Robust flavors of vanilla, espresso, whiskey, chocolate and roasted grain are balanced by hints of date and plum, with just enough hops to round it all out. Roughly one-third of the final blend is freshly brewed beer; the rest is aged for up to a year (or more!) in both first and second use whiskey casks.

Bottled. A pitch black beer with a thick dark brown head. The aroma is very roasted with strong notes of citrusy/grapefruit hoppy notes. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt wood, coffee, dark bitter chocolate, and wood, leading to a bitter, roasted finish.

I could see this beer being a regular drinker for me if it was available around here. +++Sampled from a 750 ml brown bottle this beer poured a thick black color with a large dark brown head that lingered. The aroma was sweet malty chocolate syrup. The flavor was lightly bitter, toasty and very malty with a strong cocoa presence and a light floral hop undertone. The finish was long, bitter malty cocoa. The mouthfeel was thick and smooth. Lovely.

Big thanks goes out to Kevin MrChopin for this special brew! Had the pleasure of sampling this at the 7/9/2009 Pittsburgh RB tasting extravaganza (PGHRBEXT) at the Sharp Edge Creekhouse. It will be a long time, if ever I see a spread of bottles like I did there. I am not good enough for the beers that were that we served! For example, how about this beer; Smokestack KC impy stout. Typical imp stout roasty aromas. Big and black pour, but not quite as opaque as many other imp stouts. Very strong initial flavors. However, this stuff is more refined and lacks many of the typical ubiquitous imp stout attributes. IMHO this comes across more like a really strong ale or barlywine. Long lasting rude finish, what else can be said but on style except for the refined character. Way too much for this lager lover MrChopin! Iβm not good enough to rate this brew.

Corked and caged 750. Iβve been sitting on this for a while now and just have to clear some room in the cellar, so here goes. Cork is hard to get off and I wonder if it will be flat, but it finally pops and the beer pours with a very generous tan head. The body is a dark brown that is pretty thick and as it sits and warms the head dies and leaves all kinds of trace evidence on the side of the glass. Aromas are interesting... a mix of cloves and bananas with chocolate, vanilla and brandy. That said, Iβm intrigued by the fruitiness of this... itβs more of a banana fruitiness than dark fruit, so itβs different, to say the least. The fruits come through heavily in the flavor as well... a bit of a banana and dark cherry presence with a pretty good alcoholic kick and then chocolate and dark malts. Finish is bourbon-like with a little bit of peaty smoke. This is good stuff.

I have had the good fortune to have several bottles of this beer come into my possession over the past few months, so I figured it was high time I opened one - this particular bottle (bottle #7600) was sent my way by one beastiefan2k - many thanks, Eugene - this is really want you want an IS to look like - thick dark pour, with a substantial tan head that clings to the glass - the nose is quite vinous, with some bourbon-ish character, alcohol warmth, roasted malt, anise, the faintest hints of oak - smooth, creamy mouthfeel, the familiar texture of oats used in the brewing process - the flavor is quite roasty up front, with notes of licorice, cocoa - this is followed by light vinous character, very subtle hints of the barrel - finishes with espresso-like bitterness and warming alcohol - fairly smooth and balanced for its strength - not world class, but damn close.
