Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout (Smokestack Series - formerly known as Imperial Stout)

Over-the-top but surprisingly approachable, this twist on the classic style starts with several types of malted barley, rye, oats and wheat. Robust flavors of vanilla, espresso, whiskey, chocolate and roasted grain are balanced by hints of date and plum, with just enough hops to round it all out. Roughly one-third of the final blend is freshly brewed beer; the rest is aged for up to a year (or more!) in both first and second use whiskey casks.

Pours black with a tan head. Aroma has notes of roasted malt, chocolate, caramel, coffee, licorice, dried fruits and alcohol. Bottle, 75cl corked. A dense, finger-thick tan head forms over a more or less black body. The aroma is perhaps a bit weak, but nice, with molasses, dark sugar and coffee, caramel and chocolate and some bready hints. Itโ€™s full-bodied, lighlty warming and with a nice carbonation level. Roasted malts, caramel, tar hints, alcohol, dark bread, coffee and chocolate in the flavor. A nice bitterness too, both of the roasted and malty kind, lasting for a very long time. Overall, sure a nice one, but a tad weak all the way. but very nice anyway. 150814

Bottled, from Systembolaget. Black, rich beige head. Licorice, coffee and vanilla up front. Mid sweet with medium-full body and rounded mouthfeel. Elegant, somewhat spritzy with peppery vanilla and coffee flavour, backed by caramel and licorice. Mildly warming finish.

750 ml bottle. Pours a nearly pitch black color with a large light brown head. A big ash, smoke, woody nose. The flavor is awesome: intense dark malty base, roast, cherries, dark fruit, vanilla and whiskey. Really intense, licorice and smoke. Metallic at times. Lovely big stout.

75cl Bottle, tfs Julien! Black colour, huge beige head. Aroma of milk chocolate, black liquorice, some roast, hint of coffee. Flavour is sweet, milk chocolate, liquorice, lot of it, light fruity, some oak/vanilla, light-bitter finish. Medium bodied. Expected a lot more complexity.
