With its classic brown color, reminiscent of a monk’s tunic, Leön has a nice thick and persistent, hazelnut-colored head. At first smell, the fruity scent of fruit cooked in a wood oven fills the nose. Then, coffee aromas blend with woody nuances, which turn into fuller notes of chocolate as the beer becomes warmer. The heat of its 9% alcohol content immediately hits the palate, with a touch of sour cherries in brandy. This is quickly replaced by the taste of roasted cereals, which gently fill the mouth with notes of chocolate, cocoa beans and coffee. A rather sweet beer with a strong body, complex but very enjoyable.

Dark brown color, small steady beige head. Grassy hoppy, caramelly nose with almond notes. Medium to full bodied. Caramelly, some licorice, light grassy hops. Doesn’t show 9% at all. Liquerish palate.

Bottle. Sweet banana, rose, cherry, white pepper and barley malt aroma - excellent. Dark reddish brown with small head. Sweet floral fruit flavor up front followed by chocolate malt and astringent alcohol. Excellent - enjoying this one by the fire on a cold, dreary German New Year’s Day.

Bottle. Dark brown body with ruby highlights. Short, frothy head, mostly diminishing. Aroma of overripe fruit, brown bananas, mustiness, floral hops. Hint of toasted grain, prune and plum. The flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly bitter and moderately acidic. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet, lightly bitter and moderately acidic. Tart, bordering on sour finish with slight taste of fruits. Thin body, watery texture and moderate carbonation. The beer starts sweet and fruity and promising, but that is overwhelmed by too much tartness.

(Bottle) Dark ruby colour with frothy, beige head leaving traces of lacing. Malty, fruity nose with red fruit, raspberries, cherries and spicy hops. Malty, fruity taste with dark fruit, red berries, caramel, spices and a slightly bittersweet finish with a touch of port wine. Slightly more than medium body with smooth rounded mouthfeel. Fairly sweet with some warming, vinous notes of alcohol in the finish. Nice and well balanced.

29th July 2008. Dark ale. Sourish with a just a hint of chocolate in the finish. Not bad effort at a Belgian brew. Hides the alcohol well.

Bottled 750ml. -Dark brown coloured, small to medium pale brown head, chocolate and plums in the nose. Sweet malty, dark fruits and alcoholic with notes of chocolate and spices. Nutty notes in the finish. Smooth and very drinkable for 9% ABV. Great Noel and so far the best Italian beer I’ve tried.
