Julebryg-style dark rye ale
Don’t worry, we’re pronouncing it wrong, too. Rugbrød, the classic Danish dark rye bread, inspired our 2018 brew of the same name, which in turn sparked this 2022 rebrew. Brewed with three types of rye malt, this robust brown ale showcases the earthy, spicy character of the grain, balancing perfectly with bready, nutty, slightly roasty notes from barley malts.

750 ml bottle shared by csbosox. Pour is a cloudy hazelnit brown with a fluffy tan head that falls pretty quick. Aroma is big grain rye up front, followed by a light smokey roast, and finishing with a very light sweetness. Taste is the roasty toasted grain rye, followed by light milky sweetness with the leafy tobacco smokiness closing out the finish. The three flavors transitioned quite nicely, though they did not necessarily integrate. Palate is medium, high carbonation, with a clean grainy finish. Nice beer, strong rye notes, but the additional layers of flavor made it quite interesting to drink - thanks for sharing Chris.

Bottle (and hopefully tap on Saturday), served in my Bruery snifter. Picture sent in to be uploaded. Pours with a massive, cream tan head that resides over a murky brown body with amber highlights. Aroma of coffee, toffee, pumpernickel rye bread. Very grainy, lightly sweet, light spice, earthy, tons of rye, very bready. Flavor is big on the malt. Bready, sweet, chestnut, pumpernickel rye, caramel, coffee. Slightly husky. Some alcohol is noticeable. Medium carbonation, dryish finish, medium viscosity. A very nice and unique experience.

Capped 750 from South Bay Drug. Pours a rather dark reddish copper with a four finger foamy tan head. Lots of spicey darkish malt aroma. Notes of Xmas spices. Medium plus body with lots of frothy carbonation. Flavor is cinnamon/dark malt/wood. Maybe rye is just spicey. Finishes well balanced. A little fruit comes out in the end. Pretty tasty.

750 ml bottle shared by iowaherkeye. Nose of pumpernickle bread, a light smoky note, oaky vanilla, and and light sweetness. Clear brown with a big beige, glass lacing head. Flavor is rye, very light sweetness, smoke, and bitterness. Smells better than it tastes

(Draught at BA’s BBF) Poured dark brown and cloudy with medium sized and white head. Aroma was of rye and malts, Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Tasted of malts, rye, light fruitiness and bitterness. Rye and bitterness in aftertaste.

Sampled on Cask at Max’s in Baltimore. Pours a slightly translucent ruby brown with a very thin, spitty, white head. Aroma of toasted grains, rye, caramel, a little bit of nuts. I think the cask pour killed the nose a little bit. The flavor was very nice, grainy, bready with some spice from the toasted rye, earthy and chewy with some lingering sweetness. I really liked how well the rye came through in the mouth.
